HPU’s Aspnaes selected PacWest Runner, Newcomer of Year; BYU-Hawaii’s Romney earns rookie award

PHOENIX, AZ – Hawai‘i Pacific junior Frida Aspnaes (Norrkoping, Sweden) has been named the Pacific Conference Women’s Cross Country Runner and Newcomer of the Year, while BYU-Hawaii’s Norman Kaluhiokalani earned the PacWest Women’s Cross Country Coach of Year.

The PacWest announced the awards from its media relations office in Phoenix, AZ, on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Kaluhiokalani earned the honor in a vote by the head coaches of the conference. He led the Seasiders to their third straight PacWest Championship.

Aspnaes was selected the Runner of the Year after winning the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship race on Nov. 6 and leading her team to a second-place finish. She also was the top vote-getter by the head coaches in the conference.

The PacWest Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year award consists of two parts – a pre-race vote by the head coaches coupled with the winner of the conference’s championship race. If the vote by the head coaches and the conference champion are different, then the PacWest names Co-Runners of the Year.

The Newcomer of the Year honor is presented to the top finisher in the PacWest Championship race who is competing in the league for the first time. The runner must be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student. Freshmen are not eligible.

Aspnaes also earned All-PacWest First Team honors for finishing in the Top 7 of the title race.

Aspnaes’ sophomore teammate Kim Kuhnert (Leverkusen, Germany/Landrat-Lucas Gym) finished third overall in the PacWest Championship race with a time of 23:27.2 to also claim First Team honors. She was a Second Team selection last year.

BYU-Hawaii junior Lacey (Johnson) Krout (Preston, ID/Preston) earned her third straight All-PacWest First Team accolade after taking second overall and first among the Seasiders with a time of 23:00.3. Krout was the 2008 Freshman of the Year and the 2009 Runner of the Year.

Junior Katherine Buxton (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg), freshman Chanda Romney (Forks, WA/Port Angeles), sophomore Amanda Wilson (Clayton, WA/Riverside) and sophomore Lacee Kurtz (Milford, OH/Milford) each claimed All-PacWest First Team accolades for the Seasiders this year.

Buxton finished fourth overall in the PacWest Championship race with a time of 23:36.4, while Romney took fifth for the Seasiders with a 23:38.7. Wilson placed sixth (23:59.2) and Kurtz finished seventh with a mark of 24:06.2.

Buxton earned her third straight All-PacWest selection this season. She was a First Team choice last year and a Second Team member in 2008. Romney and Wilson were honored for the first time, while Kurtz picked up her second straight All-PacWest First Team award.

For being the top rookie runner in the championship race, Romney was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year.

Academy of Art junior Cassandra Schumacher (Sweet Home, OR/Sweet Home) finished eighth overall and earned All-PacWest Second Team honors for her time of 24:12.5. Runners finishing 8-14 are named All-PacWest Second Team.

BYU-Hawaii sophomore Heather Brown (Provo, UT/Timpview) recorded a time of 24:16.7 to finish ninth, while sophomore teammate Kelsey Elder (Lancaster, CA/Quartz Hill) posted a mark of 24:48.9 to finish 13th. Both athletes were named Second Team.

Hawai‘i Hilo junior Kirsta Andrew (Garden Grove, CA/Lutheran) was the top Vulcan runner and earned All-PacWest Second Team honors for taking 10th at the conference championship. She posted a time of 24:20.5.

Andrew now is a three-time All-PacWest winner after she was named a Second Team member last year and a First Team recipient in 2008.

Graduate student Kaylene Peric (Midland, MI/Dow) earned Second Team honors for the Vulcans as well after finishing 12th in 24:39.8.

Chaminade senior Ashlie Salas-Selem (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) took 11th (24:31.8) and freshman Shannon Whener (Maui, HI/Maui) placed 14th (24:53.1) to earn Second Team accolades.
