Hot-Shooting Argonauts Hammer Spring Hill, 84-49

MOBILE, Ala. – Four Argonauts scored in double-figures and the UWF squad shot 58.1% from the floor as the University of West Florida women’s basketball team won their season-opener, 84-49, over Spring Hill College. UWF (1-0) improves to 7-1 against the Badgers in the Shannan Bergen Era.

Kirstin McIntyre led the Argonauts with 16 points, while Desiree Dotey knocked down a trio of three-point shots and scored 13 points. Jade Howard filled up the stat sheet in her UWF debut, with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Jessica Young was a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

The Badgers (2-2) shot just 18.8% in the loss. Jackie Higgenbotham was the lone Spring Hill player in double-figures, hitting four three-points en route to a 16-point effort.

UWF scored the first seven points of the game, with Howard scoring five points and assisting on a run-out basket by Dotey. The Argos pushed the lead to double-digits for the first time when McIntyre hit a basket to make the score 19-9 with 15:05 left in the first

The home team whittled the gap down to six before UWF closed the first half on an 8-0 spurt. Emily Erland scored two baskets during the run while Howard ended the half with a deuce to make the score 40-26.

McIntyre was 5-5 in the opening 20 minutes, with 12 points, while Howard scored 10 markers in the opening period.

West Florida pulled away by opening the half on a 21-7 run. Dotey pushed the lead over 20 points with a lay-up that made the score 54-33, and a free throw from Young at the 11:34 mark pushed the score line to 61-33.

The lead swelled over the 30-point mark when Dotey knocked down her final three-ball of the night at the 7:26 mark to make the score 70-39, and the largest lead of the game was 38, when Monique Thurman chipped in a three-point play with 5:19 left to push the lead to 79-41.

Erland had a solid effort off the bench, with seven points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Krissy Diggs was active in a reserve role, as well, with five assists.

Thirteen different Argos scored in the game, with six players scoring their first official points in a UWF uniform.

West Florida returns to Pensacola for their home opener against Allen University on November 19. Tip-off between the Argonauts and Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 6 pm.
