Baseball announces 50-game slate starting on Feb. 26
LOWELL, MA (NOVEMBER 26, 2010) – UMass Lowell baseball will open its 2011 schedule with a double-header against St. Thomas Aquinas on Feb. 26 in Flemington, NJ. The 50-game slate will feature 24 non-conference contests and the usual 26-game Northeast-10 slate as announced by head coach Ken Harring on Tuesday.
The River Hawks will play 13 home games at LeLacheur Park and 37 road contests, including their annual spring trip to Florida that features 11 games in eight days.
“I think it’s a schedule that sets us up for success,” said Harring. “We’ve got some good key games early that will pay dividends. We’ve got a lot of good regional games in Florida and I think we’ve balanced our schedule to give us the opportunity to win a lot of games and put us in position to get back to the NCAA Tournament.”
UMass Lowell begins the season with 18 straight road games that span the east coast. After playing the Spartans three times on Feb. 26-27, the River Hawks head down the road for a pair of double-headers with Caldwell on March 5-6.
“This schedule is a little friendlier than last year’s,” Harring continued. “Early last year we had some games on our schedule that were extremely tough and I think you need to work your way into those games.”
UMass Lowell then travels to Florida for 11 games against top flight teams like NCAA South Region participant Rollins College and East Region selection CW Post. In addition, the River Hawks will face Dowling, Mercy, Nyack, Philadelphia and St. Michael’s while on their southern swing.
The team returns to the northeast for its 2011 home opener on March 2 against the Bentley Falcons at LeLacheur Park at 3:30 p.m.
The River Hawks are coming off a successful 27-19 campaign that saw UMass Lowell narrowly miss the NE-10 Tournament. The River Hawks return 20 players who all gained valuable experience in the late season playoff chase.
Among last year’s highlights, the River Hawks defeated the defending National Champion, Lynn University, 29-3. In the rout, then senior Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) hit a program record two grand slams.
At the campaign’s conclusion, infielder Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) was named to ABCA East Region and NE-10 First Team for his terrific sophomore season. Other returning players honored were pitchers Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.), named to the NE-10 Third Team, and Garrett Cole (Manchester, N.H.), placed on the Rookie Team.
