Grand Canyon’s Marina Nesic claims Player of the Year

BYU-Hawaii’s Kim Micheletti earns Freshman of the Year honor

PHOENIX, AZ - Grand Canyon sophomore midfielder Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia) may have appeared in just eight games this season, but the head coaches of the Pacific West Conference recognized her ability to dominate the game.

Nesic was selected the 2010 PacWest Player of the Year in a vote by the league’s coaches on Tuesday, Nov. 9. The announcement of the award and the rest of the All-PacWest Team came during the PacWest Magazine, The Radio Show broadcast on Tuesday from Honolulu.

The Serbian native is currently tied for the PacWest lead in scoring and in goals after tallying with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. She also had three game-winning goals and is tied for fourth in the league.

However, in an interesting statistical anomaly, Nesic is not ranked among the per-game leaders in the PacWest or the NCAA because athletes must compete in 75% of their team’s games. She racked up her 23 points in just eight games this season.

Nesic was one of 35 All-PacWest selections after earning First Team honors and claimed one of the five top awards presented by the conference.

Her teammate, junior goalkeeper Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ/Coronoa del Sol), was named the 2010 PacWest Newcomer of the Year and All-PacWest Honorable Mention. She posted a 0.83 goals against average and an .818 save percentage while recording 54 saves (3.38 per game). She is ranked third in save percentage, stands second in goals against average, tied for fourth in shutouts (3), and completed her season with a 9-5-1 record.

PacWest Champion and playoff-bound BYU-Hawaii grabbed the remaining three awards in the PacWest thanks to freshman netminder Megan McCain (Northglenn, CO/Broomfield) who was named the PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year, rookie forward Kim Micheletti (Redding, CA/University Preparatory) who was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year, and Seasider mentor Carolyn Theurer who was selected the PacWest Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

McCain has unleashed a 14-1-2 record this season and leads the league in goals against average (0.44), save percentage (.905) and shutouts (9). She also was named All-PacWest First Team for her outstanding year to date.

Micheletti earned First Team honors at forward and has totaled 19 points on eight goals and three assists in just eight games. She is tied for third in scoring in the PacWest, ranks fifth in total goals, and tied for fifth in assists. She has had the greatest impact in deciding games, recording five game-winning goals in her eight cotests to top the league.

Theurer will bring the first NCAA II West Region Playoff game to Hawai‘i and to a PacWest school later this week when the Seasiders host the opening rounds of the national tournament. She has guided the Seasiders to a 14-1-2 overall record and a league championship.

BYU-Hawaii also boasts senior Emily Mearns (San Ramon, CA/California) as an All-PacWest First Team member. This marks the fourth time in her career that Mearns – one of the premier players in the young history of PacWest women’s soccer – has claimed the honor. She was named to the top squad in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Mearns is presently tied for fifth in total points (18), ranks fifth in points per game (1.06), and is tied for ninth in goals (6), eighth in goals per game (0.35), and second in assists (6). She is ranked second in assists per game (0.35) and tied for fourth in game-winning goals (3).

Seasider senior Natasha Aiono (South Jordan, UT/Bingham), and juniors Brenna Rhoades (Modesto, CA/Johansen) and Lauran (McCullough) Wang earned All-PacWest accolades at the midfield position. Aiono was named All-PacWest First Team, while Rhoades and Wang claimed Honorable Mention.

Aiono is currently tied for the PacWest lead in total points (23) and goals (10), tied for fifth in assists (3), and ranks second in points (1.35) and goals (0.59) per game. She now owns four All-PacWest honors for her career – three first team selections (2008-10) and one Honorable Mention (2007). She was named the 2008 PacWest Player of the Year.

Rhoades has an assist in 16 games and 13 starts for the Seasiders. She earns her first All-PacWest honor this year.

In 17 starts, Wang totaled eight points on three goals and two assists. She had one game-winner.

Junior Kami Strait (Colorado Spring, CO/Rampart) returned to the All-PacWest Team this year after earning Second Team honors in 2008. She jumped to the First Team Defense this season.

Strait produced three assists this year in 17 starts and is part of a stellar defense that has allowed just seven goals in 17 games (0.46 GAA).

Along with Phillips and Nesic, Grand Canyon University totaled five All-PacWest selections.
