The Rangers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in similar fashion to the last time these two teams met. Ben Fredrickson crossed a ball into the box and Nathan Kafer volleyed it home for his 16th goal of the season to give Regis a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
However, Mines scored five unanswered goals with the first coming in the 11th minute of the match. After receiving a pass from Tesho Akindele, Chike Sullivan dribbled towards the goal a drilled a shot from long distance to tie the score.
CSM would take the lead in the 17th minute off the foot of Alex Nass. Nass collected the ball off an attempted shot by Sean Helster scoring from 25 yards.
The Orediggers added to their lead with a goal in the 19th minute. Sullivan hit a free kick far post bending it around the wall for his 11th goal of the season giving Mines a 3-1 lead.
Mines capped its four-goal half with a goal by Baski Baker in the 32nd minute. Nass sent a free kick from the sideline into the box finding Baker who turned and scored for his 12th goal of the season making the score 4-1 in favor of CSM.
Early in the second half, Kafer had a chance to cut RU’s deficit in half with a penalty kick in the 47th minute but Kafer missed hitting the ball over the cross bar.
CSM added one final goal in the 59th minute once again on a long shot by Nass for his second goal of the match and fourth of the season.
The win was the first in program history in NCAA Tournament play for CSM. Mines did advance to the second round in 2005 by virtue of a penalty kick shootout.
The third-ranked Orediggers (17-1-2) will play the winner of Midwestern State and Truman State. Mines will play in Wichita Falls, Texas on Sunday with a Midwestern State win this evening. A Truman State win means the game will be played here in Golden, Colo. on Sunday.
