Somers, Wis.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are both listed in the inaugural 2010-11 TYR/CSCAA dual meet poll. The Bulldog men are number 10, while the Wingate women are number 13. The Ashland University men and Grand Valley State University women’s swimming and diving teams were voted as the number one Division II teams in the country. The selections were made by members of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
The Wingate teams had a solid weekend at the recent Charlotte quad meet, hosted by the Bulldogs at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday. The Bulldog women’s swimming and diving team swept the quad meet with Catawba College, Queens University of Charlotte and Savannah College of Art & Design. The Bulldog men’s swimming team defeated Catawba and Queens and dropped a heart-breaking decision to SCAD-Savannah.
In February, the Wingate men won their third consecutive BGMC championship meet title. The Bulldog women placed third in a very tight race. In March, the Wingate men finished sixth at the NCAA Division II national championship meet in Canton, Ohio. The Bulldogs notched their second consecutive sixth-place showing. The Wingate women also competed in the 2010 national meet, placing 23rd. An astounding 17 Bulldogs (12 men, five women) earned All-American honors in 2010.
The Bulldog men return to the pool Saturday, visiting NCAA Division III power Washington & Lee University for a 2 p.m. meet. Both teams will host the Fall Frenzy Invitational Nov. 20-21 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
