GCU’S Nelson Returns at Disney Classic

It’s been a long time ... too long.

After missing the latter part of the 2008-09 season and all the 2009-10 season, Grand Canyon University senior guard Rosalyn Nelson is back.

Good news for the ‘Lopes, not so much for opponents.

Nelson, in less than three full seasons, became the program’s all-time leader in assists and steals and is one of only three players in school history to score 1,000 points. In 2007-08, she was selected the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year and was the league’s freshman of the year in 2006-07.

She would have likely been in the running for back-to-back honors, but a knee injury on the road trip to Hawai’i put the brakes on the 2008-09 year.

Friday in the Division II Disney Tip-Off Classic, Nelson’s career resumes.

The Antelopes will play three games in three days to open the regular season at the Anaheim Convention Center. GCU plays Texas Woman’s University at 5 p.m. PDT. On Saturday, it takes on Alaska-Anchorage at noon (PDT) and on Sunday play UC San Diego at 6:30 p.m. (PDT).

“I’m really, really excited,” said Nelson, who starred at Deer Valley High School in Phoenix prior to doing the same at GCU. “I worked hard re-habbing every day and I’m ready.”

Nelson helped lead GCU to three straight Pacific West Conference titles.

“That’s a long time to be out and she’s working real hard,” said GCU coach Trent May. “I’m thrilled for her she’s able to go out on her terms.”

Nelson rejoins the most prolific backcourt in the program’s history. She’s teaming up with senior guard Samantha Murphy, the school’s all-time leading scorer. Between the two, they’ve scored over 2,500 points.

“You learn a lot from watching,” said Nelson, who had never had an injury prior to her junior season. “I hope I take what I’ve learned out on the court starting (Friday).”
