Gannon Wrestling Team Records Four Fourth-Place Finishes at Buffalo Open

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Gannon wrestling team began its season Sunday at the University of Buffalo Open. Adam Weinell (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville ) (125), Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) (165) and Chris Daniels (Erie, Pa. / Harbor Creek) (184) all earned fourth place finishes, representing the top finishes for Gannon.

Weinell won his first-round match (10-2) before losing to eventual champion Taylor Golba of Buffalo. Weinell won three matches in the loser’s bracket then fell to Brian Dean of Notre Dame College by a 6-3 score to finish fourth.

McKendree earned a 5-0 victory over a Bloomsburg grappler, before defeating a pair of wrestlers from Notre Dame College. Facing his third straight opponent from Notre Dame College, the freshman fell to eventual second place finisher Kevin Hardy. McKendree needed just 53 seconds to pin Pat Brady of Buffalo, leading to his fourth place finish.

Daniels earned an 11-6 victory before heading to the losers bracket, where he rolled off three straight wins. The senior fell to Ohio State’s Pete Capone to finish in third place.

In the 174-pound class, Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) won a pair of matches in the winners bracket, but finished just outside of the podium.

Both Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois Area) and Sam Brehm (Wexford, Pa. / Pine-Richland) won three matches in the loser’s bracket, but fell just short of placing in the tournament.

The meet featured over 200 wrestlers from Division I, II and III schools.

Gannon’s next action will come at the Binghamton Open on Sunday, November 14
