Four Bulldogs earn All-Region honors from Daktronics and CoSIDA

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) and senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) have been named to the 2010 Daktronics men’s soccer All-Southeast Region first team, officials announced this week. The Daktronics All-Region teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bulldog senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) and freshman defender Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) were named to the Daktronics men’s soccer All-Southeast Region second team. Mulholland and McKenna and their 11 first team brethren will advance to the Daktronics All-American ballot.

Mulholland earns Daktronics All-Southeast Region honors for the third time in his career. The two-time All-American leads the team and shares the SAC lead with his 0.50 assists per match. He is 14th in the NCAA Division II in the same category. The 2009 SAC Player of the Year assisted on Wingate’s last three game-winning overtime goals of the season. His 100 points is the 13th highest total in SAC history. Mulholland is a four-time All-SAC performer.

Earlier this month, McKenna was named first team All-SAC. He leads Wingate and ranks second on the SAC charts with 13 goals this season. His 29 points also lead the team and rank second in the conference. He ranks in the top 30 nationally in points per game, goals per game, total points and total goals.

McKenna leads the league with seven game-winning goals. He scored both of Wingate’s goals in the 2-0 win at Catawba College. McKenna also scored twice against St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Brevard College. He had the game-winner in overtime against Anderson, while also scoring the only goal of the match in Wingate’s season-opening win at UNC Pembroke.

Calandra leads the league with a 0.92 goals against average, while ranking in the top 30 nationally in the same category. He is second in the SAC with six shutouts this year. Calandra collected a season-high six saves at Brevard. He had five saves in Wingate’s 6-0 win over then-number 18 Carson-Newman College, as the Bulldogs handed the Eagles their only league loss of the year. Calandra has 46 saves on the season, with a .730 save percentage.

Andrade helped anchor a Wingate defense that allowed only 21 goals in 20 matches this season. The Bulldogs were second on the SAC charts in goals allowed (1.05) and third in goals against average (1.02). Andrade also netted a goal in Wingate’s 8-0 win over Newberry College. He started all 20 games he played during his freshman season.
