Firebirds head into Thanksgiving on 3-game win streak, beat Shippensburg 67-56

Washington, DC: November 23, 2010 – Senior forward Lillian McGill (Admin. Of Justice – Sumter, SC) had her fourth double-double in five games, recording 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Lady Firebirds (4-1) in a 67-56 win over the Shippensburg University Raiders (1-3).

The win was the third in four days for UDC, and it keeps the Lady Firebirds undefeated at home this season. They took their first lead of the ball game with 18:43 remaining in the first half on a lay-up by McGill that made the score 4-3. McGill had 10 of the team’s first 18 points as the Firebirds went on to lead for the entire half.

UDC stretched its lead to as many as 13 points twice in the first half, but by the time the buzzer sounded for halftime the Raiders had closed to within 3 points, 33 – 30. UDC outscored Shippensburg 20-12 in the paint in the first half, and 9-4 in second chance points, but the Firebirds were outscored 11-7 off turnovers.

The second half started out strong for the Firebirds with graduate student Niqky Hughes (Public Administration – Fort Worth, TX) hitting two three-pointers on her way to scoring the first 8 Firebirds points of the half. Hughes finished the game with 15 points on 50% shooting from the field.

UDC saw its lead shrink to as little as 2 points in the second half, but the Firebirds never gave up the lead, and in the end used timely three-point shooting to put away the Raiders for good.

For the game UDC shot 7 of 19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc, compared to just 2 of 12 (16.7%) for Shippensburg. The leading scorer for the Raiders was senior forward Kasey Gardner, who had 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Dana Wert also had 10 points in the loss.

The Lady Firebirds next take to the court Wednesday, December 1, at California (Pa) at 6:00pm. The game is part of a two-game Pennsylvania road trip that concludes Friday, December 3, with a game against Indiana (Pa). Both games can be heard live by clicking on the “audio” link.
