CSU Tennis Teams Earn National and Regional Preseason Rankings

COLUMBUS- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has announced both national and regional preseason rankings for Division II Men’s and Women’s tennis with both Columbus State tennis teams garnering rankings in the preseason polls.

The men’s team is ranked No.9 in the National Poll while of Barry University holds the No.1 spot in the poll. Rounding out the top five is Valdosta State, Armstrong Atlantic State, Quachita Baptist, and Lynn.

The CSU men’s team is coming off a remarkable season, in which the Cougars finished second in the Peach Belt Conference, hosted and won its portion of the Mid-Atlantic Regional to advance the Division II Tennis Championships, and made it into the national semifinals. The appearance in the D-II Championship was the first in school history for the Cougars and the semifinal appearance was the first at an NCAA championship by any tennis team in school history. The Cougars finished the season with a record of 20-5.

In the regional poll, Armstrong Atlantic State garners the top spot in the Southeast Region. Columbus State comes in at No.2 spot in the poll.  The Cougars are followed by Georgia College, Francis Marion, and Lander in the top five.

In men’s singles action, Christophe Noblet is ranked No. 52 in the National poll and No.15 in the Southeast Region.  In doubles play, CSU grabbed spots in both polls.  Gordan Divljak and Christophe Noblet are ranked No.12 in the National poll and fourth in the Southeast Region. Also ranked in the top 25 nationally is the duo of Filip Cojbasic and Martin Shishkov who are No. 22 in the national poll and also ranked ninth in the region.

The Lady Cougars also grabbed a preseason spot in the national poll coming in at No. 11 after posting a 19-6 record last season.  Armstrong Atlantic grabs the top spot in the women’s national poll.

In women’s regional rankings, Armstrong Atlantic State is the No.1 team in the Southeast Region followed by Clayton State.  Columbus State is currently ranked No.3 in the region. The Lady Cougars are followed by Francis Marion and Flagler who sits in fifth.

In singles action, Tracy Castillo landed in the top 20 at No. 17 in the National poll. Castillo is also ranked No. 5 in the Southeast Region.  The CSU women also had one doubles team ranked in the national and regional poll.  Tracy Castillo and Renata Paiva earned a top 20 national ranking coming in at No.18. The duo is also currently fifth in the Southeast Region.  

The CSU tennis teams both open their seasons on the road with the Lady Cougars opening their season Feb.19 at Clayton State.  The CSU men open their season a day later on Feb.20 at Montevallo.
