Cope Highlights UWF Selections to Daktronics All-South Region Team

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three players from the West Florida men’s soccer team were honored with selections to the Daktronics All-South Region Team, it was announced on Tuesday.  Leading the way was first team selection Frank Cope (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Preparatory School), and he was joined by second team picks Daniel Martini (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Penn State) and Marquel Waldron (Warwick, Bermuda/Saltus Grammar School).

Cope, an All-Gulf South Conference first team unanimous pick and a GSC All-Tournament team selection this year, was a leader in the Argonauts attack.  The junior played a variety of roles for head coach Bill Elliott, playing in the middle, on the outside, and at times moving up to forward.  Cope scored two goals on the season, and he led the team with 10 assists, giving him 14 total points.  At the start of the NCAA postseason, Cope ranked seventh in the country in assists.  The Mobile native also ranked third on the team in minutes played (1,622).

Martini was the Argonauts’ leading scorer as a senior, as he tallied 11 goals and added four assists for 26 points.  The All-GSC first team unanimous pick was also named the GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and he was a two-time GSC Player of the Week.  Martini finished the season strong, scoring in seven straight games leading into the NCAA regional.  The Brazilian also tallied a team-best five game-winning goals, including three in GSC play.

Waldron captained the UWF defense to an outstanding season, as the Argonauts allowed just 1.14 goals and 9.5 shots per game.  The junior was an All-GSC first team unanimous pick, and he also earned GSC All-Tournament Team honors and was a two-time GSC Defender of the Week.  The Bermuda native ranked second on the team in minutes played (1,709), and he also was a dangerous player on the attack, scoring two goals with five assists.

Players selected to the all-region first teams will advance to the ballot for the Daktronics All-America team.  Voting for the Daktronics All-America program is powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM and voted on by Division II sports information directors.
