Bloomsburg Downs Penn State Schuylkill in Season Opener

BLOOMSBURG—Larry Webster (Elkton, MD, Elkton) scored a career-high 25 points to lead five players in double figures as the Bloomsburg University men’s basketball team opened its season with an 84-62 win over Penn State-Schuylkill on Monday night at the Nelson Field House.

The Huskies led from start to finish in the game taking an early 8-2 lead with Webster scoring six of the team’s first eight points, including back-to-back dunks.

Bloomsburg extended its lead to 21 later in the half at 33-12 on a layup from Kendal Smith (Waldorf, MD, Thomas Stone) with 7:33 to play in the opening 20 minutes. Penn State Schuylkill rallied near the end of the first half going on a mini 6-0 run to narrow the gap to 45-29 at the break.

For the Huskies Webster scored 21 in the opening half on 10 of 12 shooting from the floor, several of them break away dunks.

In the second half Penn State cut the deficit to nine points on two occasions, the last coming at 14:28 when a jumper by David Hardy made it a 49-40 game. The Huskies, though, used an 11-0 run capped by a Ronnie Benson (Harleysville, Souderton Area) jumper to push the lead back to 22 at 62-40 with 9:14 to play ending the comeback threat by the Lions.

Bloomsburg pushed the lead to as many as 29 points, 79-50, with 5:01 to play on a conventional three-point play from Antoin Ellison-Lowe before settling for the 22-point victory.

Along with Webster’s 25 points, the junior also added eight rebounds for the Huskies. Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport, Williamsport) and John Schwarz (Delta, Perry Hall)added 12 points each with Jordan getting a game-high 10 rebounds. Benson also hit double figures scoring 10 points.

Bloomsburg, 1-0, will visit Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
