Balanced scoring leads Chadron State over MSU-Billings

CHADRON – Kevin McClelland scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds and three other Chadron State men’s basketball players joined him in double figures in the Eagles’ 87-74 non-conference victory over Montana State University-Billings Saturday night in Chadron.

Ron Hudson added 15 points, Ray Mitchell scored 12 and Jan Burris chipped in 10 more to help the Eagles earn their first victory of the season. Hudson’s and Burris’ totals were also career highs in points.

Both teams shot well for the game – Billings hit 30 of 59 (50.8 percent) field goals while Chadron State made 30 of 62 (48.4 percent) -  but it took the Eagles a while to get going in the first half after falling behind 17-10 with 11 minutes to play. Chadron State responded, though, and went on an 11-4 scoring run and maintained that momentum to carry a 39-34 lead into halftime.

The Eagles built their lead to as many as 14 points in the second half and were able to fend off a couple of scoring spurts from Billings with timely long-range buckets. Jordan Lisco hit two 3-pointers in the final five minutes and Mitchell added another trey during that stretch to help CSC keep its lead.

Chadron State hit nine of 20 3-pointers in the game, including four of nine in the second half.

The Eagles also shot well from the foul line, connecting on 18 of 28 attempts, while limiting Billings to just eight of 12.

Another big reason for the victory was the Eagles’ defense which forced the Yellowjackets to commit 19 turnovers. McClelland led the Eagles with four steals and Lisco added three.

Also for Chadron State, Trey Mosby, who was playing with a broken finger on his left hand, finished with five points, five rebounds and six assists, and Sammy Hines added eight points off the bench.

Raason Young led four Yellowjackets in double-digits with 17 points, 13 of them coming in the first half. Emery Henning scored 15, DeAndre Chambers finished with 12 and Tyler Barnes had 11.

Robert Mayes, the Yellowjackets’ leading scorer coming into the game averaging 17 points, scored eight and had a game-high 10 rebounds.
