PRINCETON, W.Va. – West Liberty’s Zach Amedro and Clay Beeler were honored Sunday with West Virginia Conference Player of the Week Awards in the wake of their outstanding performances during Saturday’s record-setting 82-36 romp at Seton Hill.
Amedro, a senior quarterback from Moundsville, W.Va., was named WVIAC Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 525 yards and 8 touchdowns to become the leading passer in NCAA Division II history.
Beeler, a senior linebacker from Waverly, Ohio, was honored with a WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award after turning in a career-high 18-tackle day against the Griffins.
Amedro continued his incredible late-season roll by completing 34-of-44 passes for 525 yards and 8 TDs with no interceptions despite spending most of the fourth quarter on the sidelines after breaking the previous NCAA Division II career mark of 14,350 career passing yards, set by Jimmy Terwilliger of East Stroudsburg (Pa.) from 2003-06.
The 8 touchdown passes tied the WVIAC mark set by Glenville State’s Joey Conrad in a 56-39 victory at Fairmont State on Nov. 15, 2003.
Amedro’s big day pushed his record career yardage total to 14,377 and also moved him up on several other national charts. The 29th 300-yard passing game and 28th 300-yard total offense game of his career are also NCAA Division II records and his career average of 334.3 passing yards per game is an all-time best.
The Hilltopper signalcaller now ranks No. 2 in NCAA Division II annals for career completions (1,045), career touchdown passes (124) and total offense yards per game (331.5) and No. 3 all-time in total off
Saturday’s game was not only the 11th 400-yard passing game of Amedro’s career, it was his sixth in nine games this season and the fifth in a row. With 36 touchdown passes, he leads the nation with an average of 4.0 TD passes per game and ranks No. 2 in the country with an average of 411.3 passing yards per game. Sunday’s award was third time Amedro has won WVIAC Player of the Week honors this season and the ninth of his career – a West Liberty record.
Although the offenses were in the spotlight at Seton Hill on Saturday, Beeler’s aggressive and consistent play helped the Hilltopper defense put together enough stops to slam the door on a Griffin squad which had jumped out to a 29-14 lead early in the second quarter.
His 18 tackles are the most posted by any conference player this season and among the top 10 NCAA Division II efforts of the season. Beeler – who blew past the 300-tackle milestone with his 18-tackle day – also contributed three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack to go along with a pass break-up.
Charleston linebacker Austin McClain shared the WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award with Beeler while the WVIAC Special Teams Player of the Week Award went to Concord kicker Brandon Strupp.
Beeler, Amedro and the rest of the Hilltoppers (6-3, 5-2) close out the season at Concord (8-2, 5-2) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Callaghan Stadium.
