Akinbiyi, Alpough Awarded Northeast-10 Conference Honors

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors Elizabeth Akinbiyi and Chelsey Alpough of the University of New Haven women’s volleyball team have been recognized by the Northeast-10 Conference for their performances last week on the court. The Chargers defeated Merrimack, Stonehill and Pace in the conference tournament, leading to their second title in three seasons with the league.

Recently named to the 2010 All-Championship team, Akinbiyi was selected the NE-10 Player of the Week by the conference office. Akinbiyi tallied a .362 hitting percentage on 24 kills, three errors and 58 total attempts. She also recorded a team-high 15 blocks for a 1.67 blocks per set average. Against Merrimack in the quarterfinals, Akinbiyi registered a week-high 10 kills and a team-high .421 hitting percentage.

Alpough composed a potent attack last week, earning her third Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Week accolade this season. Alpough, who joined Akinbiyi on the All-Championship team, also received the Championship’s Most Valuable Player award as well. She finished the week with 117 helpers, compiling a 13 assists per set average. Furthermore, Alpough grasped a hitting percentage of .800 with eight kills and no errors on 10 attempts.

The Chargers return to action on Thursday, November 18 with the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. UNH faces off against Pace University for the third time this season at Dowling College. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
