Lopers Slip 4 Spots in National Rankings

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team has two more individuals nationally ranked but slipped four spots to eighth in the latest Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

This is the first regular season ranking of the 2010-11 season.

Ranked fourth in the preseason, UNK received 93 points this time to be behind Nebraska-Omaha (160), St. Cloud State (150), Augustana (141), RMAC-rival Western State (137), Newberry of South Carolina (130), Minnesota State (118) and Findlay of Ohio (100).

UNO, two-time defending national champions, received all eight first place votes as well.

Individually, junior T.J. Hepburn (East Hampton, Conn.) dropped one spot to third at 157 lbs. Moving up a weight class this year, the 2010 All-American is currently 10-3 with all three setbacks coming to Division I wrestlers.

Entering the national rankings with this poll are senior Ben Hohensee (4th/285 lbs.) and junior Joey Wilson (4th/165 lbs.).

One of two seniors on the UNK roster, Hohensee (Monett, Mo.) is coming off a first place showing at the Fort Hays State Open. He also placed runner up at the Wyoming Cowboy Open and currently sports a 10-2 mark.

A transfer from Division I UC Davis, Wilson (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) was runner up at Hays last Saturday and was fourth at Wyoming to start the year. He is 11-5 with just one of his losses coming to a Division II wrestler.

The annual UNK Loper Open will be held Saturday at the Health & Sports Center. The non-team scoring event will start at 9:00 a.m. and run until the late afternoon. Around 250 wrestlers, from schools around the Midwest, are expected to compete.
