Tech shoots a blistering 62-percent from field in second half
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Basketball) – The Florida Tech Panthers improved to 3-0 on the young season following a 96-68 victory over Puerto Rico-Bayamon Friday night in the Clemente Center.
All five starting Panthers tallied double figures in points. In her first start of the season, Melbourne’s Lynisha Nelson scored a game-high 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-6 effort beyond the arc. Tamara Dowdell added 16 points, Kristen Dixon dropped 13, true freshman Jasmire Brown set a career-high with 12 and Ashton McClairen along with Briauna Hagins netted 11 points in the big win.
Along with her 17 points, Nelson dished out eight assists and pulled down five rebounds. Pacing the Panthers in the rebounds department was Dowdell and Hagins, who both snatched eight.
The Panthers never trailed in the game. Before Puerto Rico-Bayamon could tally its first bucket, it was faced with a 9-0 deficit after a pair of free throws by Dowdell. Prior to the conclusion of the first half, the opposition made it a two-point game, 25-23, on a tray by Katiria Rodriguez with over nine minutes to go.
Puerto Rico-Bayamon would trade baskets with Tech throughout the remainder of the opening period until both teams entered the locker room with the Panthers ahead 44-37.
Tech held a single-digit advantage for the opening five minutes of the second half until Dowdell converted a three-point play at the 15-minute mark. From that point, the Panthers built their lead up to 20 with over 11 minutes remaining. Abbie Stehno collected her first two buckets of her collegiate career to make it a 87-60 game with 2:25 left on the clock.
Over the final 20 minutes, the Crimson & Gray went 18-for-29 from the field for an impressive 62.1 shooting percentage. They finished the game at 51.6-percent, their highest since they shot 52.9-percent against Florida Southern on Feb. 4, 2009.
The Panthers will use Saturday to rest up before they conclude the weekend with a game against Ave Maria on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Clemente Center.
