HILLSDALE, Mich. – No. 11 Lewis women’s volleyball fell to No. 12 Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-17, 25-15) in the Midwest Regional Semifinals held at Hillsdale College. The Flyers finish the 2010 season with a 27-5 record.
Lewis rallied from a 12-6 advantage to tie the opening set at 13. Down the stretch of the set however the Lakers pulled away for a five-point opening set victory.
Following a kill by senior Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport, Ill.), Lewis took a 9-5 lead in the second set and forced the Lakers to ask for time. Lewis extended their lead to 19-11 when Grand Valley State took their final timeout. Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) recorded eight kills in the set and had an ace on set point.
Grand Valley State opened an 11-6 lead in the third set before the Flyers cut it to one with four straight points. A Grand Valley timeout spurred the Lakers to a 6-1 run and ultimately the set three victory.
The Lakers took a 14-6 lead in the fourth set that the Flyers cut to 14-10. However a long rally went the way of Grand Valley State for the Lakers’ 15th point and Lewis could never recover the momentum.
Seliga finished with 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) totaled 36 assists, 14 digs and six kills.
Grand Valley State hit .146 to Lewis’ .104 but held a 14.0 to 8.0 edge in blocks over Lewis.
“Blocking and serving was the difference tonight,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Their tough serving got us out of system and opened the door for some blocks.”
Grand Valley State (25-6) will play the winner of Indianapolis and Hillsdale for the Midwest Regional Championship on Sunday.
