Johnson C. Smith survives Wingate 60-55 in Queen City Classic

Charlotte, N.C.----Johnson C. Smith University shot 54.5 percent in the second half en route to a 60-55 NCAA Division II women’s basketball victory over Wingate University Sunday afternoon. The contest concluded the second day of the 2010 Queen City Classic, hosted by the JCSU Golden Bulls in historic Brayboy Gymnasium.
           
Johnson C. Smith remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0 overall record. Wingate is 2-2 overall. The Bulldogs take a break for the Thanksgiving holidays. Wingate returns to the hardwood Thursday, Dec. 2, visiting North Greenville University for a 5:30 p.m. encounter.
           
The battle between the Golden Bulls and the visiting Bulldogs was tied 10 times with eight lead changes. Junior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, Fla.) posted a double-double for Johnson C. Smith with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Golden Bull junior guard Terrica Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 points to top the JCSU scoring charts.

For Wingate, junior guard/forward Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) had 16 points. Washington hit three-of-six three-point field goals. Bulldog junior forward Simone Rutledge (Atlanta, Ga.) had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Rutledge spread the court by nailing two-of-three triples.

Bulldog sophomore forward Tish Logan (Suitland, Md.) flirted with a double-double, as she recorded eight points and eight rebounds off the Wingate bench. Seven of Logan’s eight boards were defensive rebounds. Sophomore guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) filled up her statistics ledger with seven points, six assists and four rebounds.

The opportunistic Golden Bulls turned 24 Bulldog turnovers into 26 points. Johnson C. Smith shot 54.5 percent (12-of-22) in the second stanza. Wingate managed only 32.3 percent shooting (10-of-31) after intermission. The Bulldogs outrebounded the JCSU Golden Bulls 35-33.
