Gregory guaranteed trip to NCAA Championship

Queens swimming has break-out meet

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Donning their fast suits and dome caps for the first time this year, the Queens University of Charlotte swimmers had a break-out meet setting 32 school records, swimming to 10 NCAA “B” cut times and punching one ticket to the NCAA Championship as Jeremy Gregory swam to the Royals first-ever “A” cut time in the 200 butterfly.

The two-day meet, the Wingate Fall Frenzy, was hosted by Wingate at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Nov. 20-21. Overall the No. 13 men’s team placed fourth with 475 points behind NCAA DI team College of Charleston, 2010 NAIA Champion Savannah College of Art and Design and 2010 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Champion Wingate. The women’s team, who was just ranked No. 8 in the Avidasports Power Ranking, placed ninth, with 122 points, out of the 10 team field.

“The teams turned in a fantastic performance this weekend,” said Head Coach Jeff Dugdale. “Both the men and the women continue to improve and impress me with their efforts. All of the hard work was topped off with numerous “B” cuts and our first-ever “A” cut by Jeremy.”

Gregory won the 200 fly with his time of 1:48.09, more than a second under the NCAA “A” cut time of 1:49.39. The time is not only the fastest in DII, but the only "A" cut in the event this season. Gregory also won the 200 individual medley with his “B” cut time of 1:51.80. In addition to the previously mentioned NCAA standards, Gregory added three more “B” cuts to his season.

On the women’s side Caitlin Seed (Macedonia, Ohio) took the individual titles in the 50 free, the 100 free and the 100 fly, each with a “B” cut time. Additionally she swam to a “B” standard in the 100 backstroke.

The women’s relay swimmers set new school records in each event they participated in. The combination of Seed, Kelsey Smith (Charlotte, N.C.), Mary Strand (Mooresville, N.C.) and Theresa Hawkins (Zebulon, N.C.) bettered times in the 200 and 400 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays.

The men followed suit setting new relay records in the 200, 400 and 800 relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays. Austin Hughey (Auburn, Ala.), Gregory, Christian Yeatts (Charlotte, N.C.) and Daniel Bowden (Charlotte, N.C., Ardrey Kell) swam to a second place finish in the 200 medley relay, while Gregory, Bowden, Kyle Disney (Raleigh, N.C.) and Yeatts finished third in the 800 free relay.

Yeatts had two second place individual finishes. One in the 200 fly with a 1:54.45 “B” standard and the second in the 1650 free with another “B” cut time, 16:05.28.

The vast improvements by both squads will bode well for the next Avidasports Power Ranking that comes out on Dec. 1. The ranking uses a team’s improvement in events and compares that to other teams within their division.
