(Miami, Fla.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team traveled to sunny Miami, Florida for a non-conference game with Barry University. The Golden Eagles rebounded several times after trailing the Buccaneers but a comeback was not to be as Barry defeated UMC 71-61.
Barry led by as many as 12 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles went on an 11-0 run to get within 25-24. UMC took the lead at the 1:25 mark of the first half 28-27 on a Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) layup. Barry took a team timeout after the layup to try and regroup. The breather helped as the Buccaneers took the lead into half 32-30 after a 5-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by Danielle DeBerry with one second remaining.
Barry started the second half much like the first half with strong shooting. The Buccaneers extended the lead to 14 points after a UMC 10-0 run that got the Golden Eagles within four points at 54-50. That would be as close as Minnesota, Crookston would get in the second half as Barry took the 71-61 non-conference victory, dealing the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season.
Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, So., Albertville, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with 14 points in 29 total minutes. She was 6-10 from the field, 1-3 from the free-throw line and 1-2 from long range. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, Sr., Northfield, Minn.) added 13 points, eight of which were from the free-throw line. Zelinsky added nine points, tied a game-high with nine rebounds and earned a team-high five steals.
Yvonne Houston led Barry University with a game-high 23 points. She was 8-15 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line. Nadia Tuani led the Buccaneers with nine boards.
Minnesota, Crookston moves to 2-1 overall this season. Barry University advances to 3-2 overall this season. The Golden Eagles open the NSIC season on Friday, December 3 when the team travels to Duluth to play the Bulldogs. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
