WEST FLORIDA MEN'S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES: UM Coca-Cola Classic

News & Notes

ROAD TRIP CONTINUES
After a 1-2 weekend at the Alaska Invitational, the West Florida men’s basketball continues its season-opening road trip at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Montevallo on Thanksgiving weekend.  The Argos will have a tough test ahead of them, facing Georgia College and State and No. 13 Montevallo, two teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year.

TOURNAMENT STANDOUTS
Juniors Mike Lewis and Jamar Moore earned spots on the all-tournament team at the Alaska Invitational.  Lewis averaged 17 points per game in the tournament, while Moore nearly averaged a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds per contest.

GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jamar Moore was the first Argonaut to earn GSC Player of the Week honors, it was announced on Tuesday.  Moore had two double-doubles in three games last weekend, and he also scored in double digits in all three games.  In Saturday’s loss to host Alaska Fairbanks, Moore also flirted with a triple-double, adding six assists to his 13 points and 10 rebounds.

OFF THE BENCH
Three of UWF’s most productive players at the Alaska Invitational came off the bench in all three games.  Jamar Moore led the way with 15 ppg and 8.0 rpg at the tournament, while Anthony Sims (9.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and Darryl McGhee (8.0 ppg) also put in quality minutes off the bench.

UWF vs. PBC
The Argos start a string of three straight games against opponents from the Peach Belt Conference this weekend.  Last year UWF went 2-3 against teams from the PBC: the Argos split two games against Columbus State, defeated Flagler, and lost two to Montevallo.

20-20
Mike Lewis scored 20 points in each of his last two games, and he now ranks seventh in the GSC with 16.5 per game.  Of the team’s current players, only Darryl McGhee has scored 20 points or more in a game, and he did so twice in 2008-09.  Lewis is a three-point specialist, as 51 of his 66 points this year have come from behind the arc.

TRIPLE THREAT
Jamar Moore had the best game of his young UWF career against Alaska Fairbanks.  The junior shot 6-10 from the floor and scored 13 points, and he also added 10 rebounds and six assists.  Moore leads the team in assists (2.5 per game) and ranks second in rebounds (6.5) and points (11.8).

CAREER HIGHS FOR WHITE
Keldric White has started three of four games this year as he is taking on a larger role on the team.  In UWF’s first game at the Alaska Invitational, White set new career highs with 10 rebounds and five assists, and he also added eight points for a strong overall game.  White is averaging 5.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in his sophomore season.

REBOUND BATTLE
UWF outrebounded each of its three opponents at the Alaska Invitational, but the Argos still lost two of three.  In four games this year, UWF has been led by four different players in rebounds each game, and Anthony Sims leads the team with 7.0 per game.  West Florida is 7-3 under head coach Bob Stinnett when the Argonauts outrebound the opposition.

ARGOS PICKED 4TH IN GSC EAST
Despite its roster turnover, West Florida was picked fourth out of six teams in the Gulf South Conference East Division Preseason Coaches Poll. Stinnett turned over almost the entire roster, and UWF was picked ahead of West Georgia and West Alabama by the East’s six head coaches.

McGHEE EARNS PRESEASON ALL-GSC NOD
Returning senior forward Darryl McGhee is a large part of the reason why UWF was picked fourth in this season’s GSC East race. McGhee sat out 2009-10 but is back again and representing the Argonauts on the 2010-11 Preseason All-GSC team.

UP NEXT: COLUMBUS STATE
After the UM Coca-Cola Classic the Argos will have one day off before a trip to Columbus, Ga. to face Columbus State.  UWF split two games with the Cougars last season, and again this year they will face CSU in a home-and-home series this year.  The Argos face CSU on the road on Nov. 29, and they will host the Cougars at the UWF Field House on Dec. 15.
