Cabbage, Mabry, Jr. lead unattached Grizzlies at UNC Open

GREELEY, Colo.- Paul Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Mark Mabry, Jr. (Benson, Ariz.) both claimed top four places as a group of 15 Adams State College wrestlers, who all competed unattached, won 26 combined matches at Saturday's Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open.  Cabbage finished second in the 184-pound bracket while Mabry, Jr. took fourth at 174 pounds.

Cabbage, a sophomore who joined the Grizzly program after the semester break last winter, has now placed in both of his open tournaments this year and all three in which he has competed since transferring to ASC from Pratt (Kan.) Community College, where he wrestled in 2008-09.  Cabbage had taken third at last week's Wyoming Cowboy Open and the same place at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open in February.

On Saturday, he went 3-1 raising his overall record to 8-2.  After receiving a bye in the first round, the former 2-time high school state champion from Rio Rancho High School needed just 43 seconds to pin Ryan Swanson, an unattached wrestler from Colorado Mines, before claiming a 5-0 shutout win over Northwest Wyoming's Nick Peterson.  He then got by Eric Breenan of the host University of Northern Colorado squad by a 3-1 score in the semifinals before being stopped by Western State's Charlie Pipher, ranked second in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Rankings.

Mabry, Jr., a 2-time state champion while at Benson High School, coached by former Grizzly 2-time All-American Casey Woodall, fared nearly as well posting a 3-2 record throughout the day.  He is now 5-4 on the year.

Sophomore Taylor Stam (Parker, Colo.) also saw his first mat time of the season and claimed four wins in heavyweight action before falling out of the consolation bracket due to injury default in the consolation quarterfinal round.

Casey Lynn (Cortez, Colo.) also had another solid day posting a 3-2 record with two more wins coming by fall in 141-pound action.  He also had a 20-4 technical fall victory in his first consolation bracket after dropping his tournament opener and is now 7-3 with six wins coming by fall.

The Grizzlies will take the Thanksgiving holiday weekend off before returning to open tournament action on Dec. 4 at Fort Hays State's Bob Smith Open in Hays, Kan.
