BLOOMSBURG—The 31st Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) field hockey championship tournament will be held at Bloomsburg University on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20.
The tournament will feature the top two finishers from both the PSAC Eastern and Western Divisions competing for the conference title. In Friday’s first semi-final at noon, East Stroudsburg, the second seed from the East, against Shippensburg, the top seed from the West. In the 2:30 p.m. game Mansfield, the number two seed from the West, will face Bloomsburg, the top seed from the East. The winners will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the title.
Tickets are priced at $7 for adults, $2 for students and seniors with any student from a PSAC school is free with current ID.
Bloomsburg is the defending PSAC champion having beaten Shippensburg 2-1 in last year’s final. Overall the Huskies own 16 PSAC titles, while former PSAC-member Lock Haven is second with 11, with Millersville with two titles and IUP and Shippensburg one each.
The Huskies, under new coach Nikki Rhoads, come in to the tournament with a record of 16-2 and winners of 11 straight games after a 3-2 loss to East Stroudsburg on Oct. 2. On the season the Huskies are led in scoring by junior Amanda Riley (Tannersville, Pocono Mountain East) with 16 goals and 14 assists for 46 points, while Lauren McGinley (Wilkes-Barre, Coughlin) is second with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points. Overall the Huskies have a balanced scoring attack with 15 players having scored at least one goal with eight of those having five or more goals.
In the cage for the Huskies has been sophomore Meghan Hollenbach (Blandon, Fleetwood) who has posted a goals against average of 0.95 for the season with four shutouts and 45 saves. She has allowed just two goals in the last five games for Bloomsburg.
East Stroudsburg is 16-4 on the season for coach Sandy Miller. The Warriors are led in scoring by Jessica Frantz who has 30 goals and six assists for 66 points. Frantz leads the PSAC in both points per game with 3.30 and in goals per game with 1.5 per contest. Second on the team in points is Brittany Kocis with seven goals and a team-high 12 assists for 26 points.
In goal for the Warriors is Maureen Ordnung who has a goals against average of 1.40 with three shutouts and 102 saves.
Mansfield is 6-14 on the season for head coach Diane Monkiewicz. The Mountaineers are led by a trio of players, Kristy Tutorow, Taryn Schwaille and Kristyn Grunza. Tutorow leads the team in goals and points having scored 14 times and assisting on three others for 31 points. Schwaille is second with 13 goals and three assists for 29 points, while Grunza is third with 11 goals and six assists for 28 points.
In goal, Jamie Twist has seen the most action for Mansfield and has a 128 saves on the year.
Shippensburg, ranked number one in the country, is 20-0 on the year for coach Bertie Landes. The Lady Raiders lead the PASAC in goals per game with 4.6 (92 goals) and have allowed just 0.84, also tops in the PSAC. Shippensburg is led offensively by Kristina Taylor who has 19 goals and two assists for 40 points and is tied with Bre White for the team lead in points with 40 coming on 15 goals and 10 assists. Ashley Taylor is third in points with 32 on 10 goals and 12 assists. The Lady Raiders have 13 players with at least one goal and five in double figures.
In goal for Shippensburg will be Ciarra Delost who has a 0.73 goals against average with four shutouts and 50 saves this season.
Among the four teams Shippensburg has knocked off all three of the teams in the PSAC playoffs. The Lady Raiders beat Mansfield and East Stroudsburg twice and Bloomsburg once. The Huskies have split with East Stroudsburg, knocked off Mansfield once and lost to Shippensburg. East Stroudsburg is 1-1 against the Huskies, 0-2 against the Lady Raiders and are 2-0 against Mansfield. The Mountaineers are the only team to not register a win over the teams in the tournament.
