After defeating the Wingate University Bulldogs 30-28 on Nov. 27, the Albany State University Golden Rams hope to get a step closer to an NCAA Division II championship title when they take on Delta State University in the quarterfinals game on Saturday, Dec. 4. The No. 1 Golden Rams and the No. 2 Statesmen will go to battle for the Super Regional Two title at 1 p.m. at the Albany State University Coliseum. The two teams will go face-to-face for the first time in Saturday’s matchup.
The Statesmen from Cleveland, Miss. (9-3) beat the No. 6 University of North Alabama Lions 47-24 in the second-round game at DSU’s Parker Field-McCool Stadium to advance to the quarterfinals. Statesmen Trevar Deed and Brandon Lucas both rushed for more than 100 yards to lead DSU’s offense, which racked up 534 yards of total offense, including 359 rushing yards.
Head coach Mike White, who makes his second quarterfinal game appearance, said he is excited about home field advantage.
“We are very excited about playing at home and another opportunity compete in the playoffs. This is a great opportunity in our team’s history because we’ve never won 12 games before,” head coach Mike White said. “I was very pleased with the way our players performed against Wingate. We knew we had to come out strong and play four quarters of solid football. We’ve have to come just as strong against Delta State.”
Tickets for the playoff game are $15 for adults and $5 for kindergarten through 12th grade students and ASU and opponent team students with a valid ID. Tickets for the Quarterback Club Lounge, which are available to current members only, are $35.00 each. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 1) at the ASU Business Office Cashier’s Window in the ACAD Building, Odyssey Records, June Bug’s Grocery Store and the Radium Springs Petro Store. QuarterBack Club members should call LaTonya Conner at 229-430-4755 for more information about tickets.
ASU Athletics Director Richard Williams has declared Saturday as “ASU Day” and encourages football fans in the Albany and surrounding community to support the Golden Rams.
“It’s official! Saturday is our day … Golden Rams Day! We want everyone in this community and local business to come out, support the Golden Rams and see some of the best football in Division II,” Williams said. “We are asking our fans to wear blue and gold. We’re asking businesses to show support by decorating their store fronts or displaying signs. We had a great turnout of fans last weekend and we anticipate a great show of support as we take on Delta State.”
In the other quarterfinal games on Saturday, the No. 4 Shepherd (10-1) will face No.2 Mercyhurst (9-2) in the Super Regional One game, and No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth will face the No. 2 Augustana in the Super Regional Three game.
