BLOOMSBURG – Bloomsburg opened a 2-0 lead, then weathered a furious comeback by East Stroudsburg University before ultimately capturing the PSAC field hockey championship with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Sports Stadium.
Senior forward Caitlin Brownley scored to pull the Warriors within one goal with 11:32 left and the visitors applied constant pressure until the final whistle. ESU held a 14-8 advantage in shots for the game and its final shot, a drive by senior midfielder Brittany Kocis with five seconds left, went just wide of the cage after a scramble in front of the goal.
The Huskies (18-2) won their third straight PSAC championship and 17th in school history, getting their scoring from Jenna DiSabatino 9:32 into the game and Amanda Riley 5:36 into the second half. Riley was named the tournament’s MVP with three goals and one assist on the weekend.
Meghan Hollenbach made nine saves in goal for Bloomsburg and junior Maureen Ordnung was credited with five saves for the Warriors. All three games between ESU and Bloomsburg this year have been decided by one goal – 3-2 (ESU) at Bloomsburg, 1-0 (Bloomsburg) at ESU, and Saturday’s 2-1 score.
ESU (17-5) was playing in the PSAC championship game for the second time in school history and was in pursuit of its first-ever PSAC title after upsetting No. 1-ranked Shippensburg, 2-1, in the semifinals on Friday.
The Warriors will await the announcement of the field of six schools that will compete in the NCAA Division II Championships which will be made on Sunday at 9 a.m. ESU was third in the South Region in last week’s rankings, with the top three schools representing the region.
Brownley’s goal was her eighth of the season and the 38th of her career at ESU, breaking a tie to move into fourth in school history. Kocis had her 13th assist of the year, tied for second in a single-season at ESU, and moved into a tie for fourth with 21 career assists.
