LAURINBURG, N.C.—The Tiffin University wrestling team won four consecutive matches after trailing by 11 to rally back for a 21-20 NCAA Division II dual match victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Harris Court Saturday afternoon.
The Dragons (2-1) had the only two pins on the day to squeak out their second straight win. The Knights (0-2) won four of the first five matches before dropping four of the last five bouts.
The sophomore tandem of Sterling Perry (Hampton, Va.) and Richard Manwarren (Middleburg, Fla.) scored the most team points for the Royal Blue and White with major decisions. Perry (133) and Manwarren (157) both used three takedowns to build up their point totals. Perry also have five near fall points en route to his 14-3 win while Manwarren used a late reversal to earn his 9-1 major decision.
Manwarren leads SAPC with 10 wins on the season. Manwarren had 10 total wins in his rookie season.
The Knights got a pair of overtime wins from senior Greg Todd (Gloucester, Va.) at 149 and Justin Hoover (Virginia Beach, Va.) at heavyweight.
After freshman Kyle Begg (Blufton, Ohio) forced overtime at 149 with an escape, Todd was able to keep Begg down in the first 30-second tiebreaker overtime period and then escaped in the second one to earn the 2-1 victory.
Hoover was closing in on a win in regulation against freshman Nick Hamilton (Greenwich, Ohio), who weighed approximately 50 pounds heavier than Hoover but Hamilton was able to record a takedown as time expired in regulation to tie the match. Hamilton then looked to have won the match with another takedown as time was expiring in the one-minute sudden victory overtime period but it was determined the horn had sounded before the takedown. Hoover was then able to keep the much larger Hamilton down for 30 seconds before scoring his go-ahead points with a reversal in the second tiebreaker period.
The Knights started the match with a six-point cushion as junior Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) was awarded a forfeit win at lightweight. The Dragons only points before the halfway intermission came on a freshman Lance Zappitella (Conneaut, Ohio) pin at 141. Zappitella remains undefeated in dual matches at 3-0 with his 3:50 fall.
Sophomore Johnny Merryman (Shadyside, Ohio) started Tiffin’s comeback efforts with a 73 second pin at 165 pounds. The Dragons then posted three consecutive decisions by freshmen to take a 21-17 lead into the final showdown. Joe Miller (Bellevue, Ohio) had the most impressive win with a 12-5 decision at 184.
In the other two trips to the mat, Tiffin produced a pair of one-point wins thanks to riding time in both contests. Andrew Nealan (Bethel, Ohio) and Nathan Strickland both scored four points in the final two minutes of their respective one-point wins over 174-pound sophomore Josh Wensel (Bellefonte, Pa.) and 197-pound junior Josh Price (Fayetteville, N.C.).
St. Andrews will next visit nationally ranked Newberry College after the Thanksgiving break. The Knights will face the Wolves on Friday, December 3 at 7 p.m.
