'Dogs advance to Food Lion SAC semi-finals with 1-0 win over Catawba

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore midfielder Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, Mass.) scored with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over the Catawba College Indians in the first round of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer tournament Tuesday night. The Bulldogs improve to 12-2-3 overall; they will take on Tusculum College in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. Catawba falls to 7-8-3 overall.

Miranda scored the lone goal of the match in the 37th minute. The Bulldogs were awarded a free kick five yards outside the box. Miranda lined one that hit the crossbar and went into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season. Miranda had a similar opportunity moments earlier, firing a shot from the same distance. The earlier attempt hit the crossbar directly and did not bounce in.

The Bulldogs now have a league-best 10 shutouts on the season. Junior goalkeeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.) had five saves for the Indians.

Wingate will take on Tusculum College Friday afternoon (3 p.m.) in the SAC Tournament semifinals. The seventh-seeded Pioneers defeated the second-seeded Eagles of Carson-Newman College 1-0 in overtime Tuesday night. The Wingate-Tusculum match will take place at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. The Bulldogs defeated the Pioneers 2-1 in overtime at Tusculum earlier this season.
