Wildcats Down Mavericks

Arlen’s Double-Double Paces Wayne State

Mankato, Minn. — The Mavericks opened their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule against 18th ranked Wayne State inside the confines of the Taylor Center Friday night, dropping an 80-49 decision to the Wildcats.

Wayne State jumped out to a 12-0 lead to open the game against Minnesota State as MSU would shoot 0-for-6 from the floor during that run.

Junior Laura Weber put the Mavericks on the board at 15:52, as the Mavericks shot 1-for-7 from the floor to open the game. Eight minutes into the game WSC’s Ashley Arlen had 12 of Wayne State’s first 21 points as it opened a 21-7 lead.

MSU didn’t let down as they fought back and went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to ten late in the half.  Wayne State used a late push to open a 36-20 halftime edge.

At the half, the Wildcats scored 24-of-36 points in the paint, with Arlen leading the way with 20 points shooting 7-of-9 from the floor. The Mavericks failed to score in the last 5:41 of the first half as they shot 25 percent from the field.

The second half played much like the first as Wayne State’s lead never dipped below double-digits.

MSU finished the night shooting 34.5 percent while Wayne State shot 50 percent.

Minnesota State junior Lauren Barber finished with a team-high 13 points.

Junior forward Arlen would end the day with 26 points and 12 rebounds, earning her second double-double of the season.

MSU is 3-2 this season and 0-1 in the NSIC. Minnesota State takes on 19th ranked Augustana tomorrow night at the Taylor Center at 4 p.m.
