BEMIDJI, Minn. – Three Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon women’s basketball players scored in double figures on Friday night as the team opened conference play with a huge 74-46 win over the Bemidji State Beavers.
MSUM opens the 2010-11 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action with a win, moving the team’s overall record to 3-1. This was the first time since Nov. 28, 2009 that the Dragons held an opponent to under 50 points, and the first time since Feb. 23, 2008, that MSUM held a conference opponent to under 50 points. The Dragons topped Southwest Minnesota in 2008, 85-41, while the team held Mayville State to 46 points last season.
The Dragons hands were hot in the first half, going 5-of-8 from behind the three point line and 11-of-15 from the field in the first 11 minutes of the game. Seven of the Dragons scored in the first 11 minutes, with five different athletes each putting up a three pointer.
At 9:19 in the first half, Betsy Dickson hit the Dragon’s fifth three pointer of the game, putting the team up 27-16. In the next possession Dickson grabbed a rebound and hit Angie Jetvig as she tallied her 11th point of the game on a layup and was fouled to give MSUM a 14 point lead, 30-16.
The Dragons were up by 22 at halftime, as the team went 7-for-13 from long range, shooting 57.7 percent in the first half. Jetvig had 17 points in the first half, going 7-for-7 from the field, missing only one shot, coming at the charity stripe where she was 2-of-3.
The team increased their lead to 17 points at the 5:34 mark before BSU burned a time out. Marisa Yernatich had a layup after she assisted Jetvig’s first three-pointer of the game. The lead increased to 22 with 41 seconds left on the ticker as Dickson hit her second three of the game.
MSU Moorhead increased their lead to as much as 32 (8:26) in the second half as three Dragons scored in double figures to lead the team to their third win of the season. Jetvig finished with 22 points leading the field, going 8-10 from the field. She also had five rebounds and 2 blocks. Freshman Haley Thomforde scored 14 points for a career high. Dickson finished with 11, as she was perfect from the field going 4-of-4, and 3-of-3 from behind the arc.
The Dragons finished the game hitting 23 shots from the field, for 44.2 percent. Nine three pointers were knocked in by MSUM, while they held the Beavers to two long range field goals, shooting only 10.5 percent from behind the three-point line. The Dragons also held each of the Beavers to under ten points, with their top scorers each putting up seven points.
MSUM also out-rebounded their opponent for the fourth time this season, grabbing 48 to BSU’s 27. Freshman Katey Wrobel led the team as she grabbed a career high 10 rebounds, and also had two blocks. Freshman Jenna Van Dyke had six boards, five coming on defense. Jetvig and Thomforde each finished with five.
The Dragons will return to the floor on Saturday as they will play Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m.
