UAA men clip T-birds for 4th straight win

FAIRBANKS (Dec. 4) – Freshman Travis Thompson came off the bench for 20 points on perfect shooting Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team to a 71-53 victory over British Columbia at the Patty Center, capturing the unofficial title of the ninth annual Glacier Classic.

Senior point guard Drew Robinson added 13 points – making all five of his field goals – and dished three assists as the Seawolves improved their record to 5-3 with their fourth straight victory.

British Columbia (14-3) was led by a game-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from guard Josh Whyte – the reigning Canadian national player of the year – but the rest of the Thunderbirds combined to shoot just 10 of 42 (.238) from the field. It was the first double-digit loss of the season for the two-time defending CIS national runners-up.

The Seawolves never trailed, using a 12-0 run late in the first half to take a 34-22 lead at the break. Leading scorer Taylor Rohde, who came in averaging 14.4 points per game, then scored all 10 of his points in the second half to help UAA pull away.

Senior guard Brandon Walker was the fourth Seawolf in double figures with 11 points (4-8 FG, 3-3 FT), adding six rebounds and three assists.

Thompson stole the show, however, with 7-of-7 shooting, including four three-pointers, and sank both of his free throws. The 6-1 guard from Anchorage’s Dimond High School became the first Seawolf freshman since Feb. 19, 2005 to score 20 points in a game, when Carl Arts hit for the same number in a double-overtime loss to Seattle Pacific.

The Seawolves outshot the Thunderbirds 56.3 percent to 30.9 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent to 17.9 percent from the three-point line in the first-ever basketball meeting between the schools.

Saturday’s game counts on UAA’s overall record but will not have any impact on playoff considerations when NCAA Tournament bids are handed out in March.

UAA is now 17-1 all-time in the Glacier Classic, including 16 straight victories.

The Seawolves will return home for finals next week and won’t take the court until Nov. 17 when they play Walla Walla in the opening game of the AT&T Jamboree at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
