Northern State Preview

Northern State University enters play on Friday against BSU with a 5-3 mark on the season. The Wolves are currently 2-2 in NSIC play after suffering losses to the conference’s two ranked teams, Wayne State College and Augustana College, last weekend. NSU upended Concordia University, St. Paul and St. Cloud State to open conference play.

The Wolves bring a tall physical inside presence into Friday’s game as four of their five starters are listed as being around six foot or above including 6-6 post Krista Rabenberg. Senior forward Jodi Reinschmidt comes into the weekend as NSU’s scoring leader with 15.4 points per game. Reinschmidt is averaging 5.9 points per game. Forward Mikayla Barondeau is averaging a near double-double through eight games with 12.1 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game. Rabenberg enters the weekend averaging 10.3 points and 5.4 boards. The Wolves are outrebounding opponents by nearly 10 boards a game and holding opponents on average to under 60 points per game.

Series History

The Wolves lead the all-time series with the Beavers 42-8 and have captured the last four meetings with BSU last picking up a win Jan. 11, 2008.

U-Mary Preview

The University of Mary comes into the weekend with a 4-4 mark on the year. The Marauders lost both their match-ups with ranked foes last weekend falling to No. 13 Wayne State College (Neb.) and coming up just short of an upset over No. 16 Augustana College (S.D.) 76-74.

U-Mary is led by forward Shaunna Knife’s 11.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Laura Petersen also comes into Saturday averaging double figures with 11.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest.

Saturday’s meeting between the Beavers and Marauders will be part of Midco Sports Network’s NSIC package. Saturday’s women’s game will begin airing at 6 p.m., with the men’s game following the conclusion of the women’s game. Midco Sports Network is channel 28 for Midcontent subscribers in Bemidji.

Series History

BSU holds a 2-6 mark all-time against the University of Mary. The Beavers captured last year’s lone meeting between the two schools 71-61. Before last year the Marauders had won the last six meetings.

BSU Weekend Preview

The Bemidji State women’s basketball team comes into the weekend with a 4-4 mark after picking up a split at home last weekend with a loss to Winona State and a victory over Upper Iowa.

BSU was led last week by the play of Beaver Pride Female Athlete of the Week Colleen McKay (Sr., C, Barnum, Minn.). McKay averaged 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in three games for BSU last week including a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds against the Peacocks.

Along with McKay, the Beavers got a strong performance on Saturday from freshman Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.), who poured in a career-high tying 21 points including eight-of-eight from the charity stripe.

BSU Ranked In Top 10 Nationally For Free Throws

The BSU women’s basketball currently ranks sixth nationally shooting free throws at a 78.9 percent clip as a team. The Beavers have five players with more than 10 attempts shooting above 80 percent from the line led by Samantha Baldwin (Jr., G, St. Thomas, N.D.) at 83.3 percent. Wessling comes into the weekend shooting 82.4 percent from the charity stripe after a flawless eight-for-eight performance from the line last Saturday. Melissa Borstner (Fr., G, East Bethel, Minn.), Jessie Althoff (So., F/C, Becker, Minn.) and Anna Hebrink (Fr., G, Austin, Minn.) are all also shooting over 80 percent from the line.

Baldwin a Double-Figure Machine

Baldwin tallied only one double-figure scoring outing last season for the Beavers with 10 points against U-Mary. However, Baldwin has become a new player of sorts thus far in the 2010-11 season. She has tallied double-figure scoring in four-of-eight games and tallied her first career double-double against the College of St. Scholastica. Baldwin scored in double figures in seven games as a freshman. Her 13 rebounds against CSS marks the third time in her career she has grabbed over 10 rebounds.

Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week

McKay became the second player this season to earn Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors on Dec. 15 after averaging 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in three games last week. McKay joins Wessling as BSU women’s basketball players to earn the honor so far this season. Wessling was named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week after averaging 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in her first week of collegiate basketball.

20 or More for Wessling

Wessling has tallied two performances with 20 or more points through her first eight career games in a BSU uniform. The mark is the best for any BSU freshman since Mike Curfman took over as the Bemidji State coach during the 2005-06 season.
