New Haven Women's Basketball Suffers 10-Point Loss at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 74-64 Tuesday night at Adelphi University. With the loss, the Chargers round off their 2010 half of their Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a 2-5 overall record and a 1-5 record in the NE-10. The Panthers improve to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Anh-Dah Tran gave the Chargers an earlier lead with the first points of the game. The freshman guard hit a three-pointer on the Chargers third possession to take the opening lead. Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty then kept the Chargers in the lead as she scored six straight points for UNH, keeping them in the lead 8-6 with 15:11 left in the first half. Two and a half minutes later, the Panthers scored their first points of an 18-2 run which put them ahead 20-10 with 8:54 left in the half. Adelphi would improve its lead to as many as 13 points in the first half, while the Chargers managed to cut the lead to five, 32-27, with one-minute left int he half.

Ithier-Vicenty led the Chargers with seven points, three rebounds and three assists in the first half. Tran added eight points. New Haven shot 31.4-percent from the floor in the half, while the Panthers shot a blistering 61.5-percent from the floor.

UNH opened the second half with a 9-3 run to cut the Panthers lead to two point, 38-36, three minutes into the half. Ayana Duncanson connected on a pair free throws at the 14:32 mark and brought the Chargers within three points at 44-41. Adelphi rallied in the next six minutes with a 14-4 run, to take a 60-45 lead with 8:43 left in the second half. After leading double figures, Tran led the Chargers on a comeback in the final minutes. The freshman converted a three-point play with 1:19 left, bringing the score to 66-62. A pair of missed shots and six-straight free throws from Adelphi sealed the victory for the Panthers.

Powered by a strong second-half, sophomore Jill Barranger led the Chargers with 20 points, including 18 in the second half. Tran finished with 19 point, while Ithier-Vicenty added 11 points.

New Haven struggled from the floor, connecting on 26-of-69 shots, 37.7-percent. Adelphi led the rebounding battle, leading 38-34, but the Chargers caused 23 Panther turnovers, compared to 13 by UNH.

New Haven returns to action at the University of District of Columbia Classic on Saturday, December 18. The Chargers take on UDC in the opener of the Classic, while they take on Shaw University on Sunday, December 19 in another game of the classic.
