Saint Anselm Cruises to 72-57 Victory Over Purple Knights
Saint Michael's jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead before the Hawks answered with a 12-4 run, tying the game at 12-12 with 12:44 left on a basket by senior John Mariano (Naugatuck, Conn.). The Purple Knights regained control though and with just over six minutes left, the Hawks trailed by a 23-16 margin. Saint Anselm tied the game at 28-28 with 1:27 left on a triple from senior Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.) before the two teams went into the halftime break tied up at 30-30.
The two teams went back and forth in the opening four minutes of the second half as the Purple Knights pushed the lead to as many as seven before the Hawks answered. Saint Anselm took its first lead of the game with 15:40 left as junior Jack Keough (Owego, N.Y.) converted a layup for the 38-37 advantage. The Hawks and Knights traded the lead before five straight points by senior Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) gave Saint Anselm its biggest lead of the game at 47-42 with just over 11 minutes left.
With the Hawks up just two, the visitors embarked on a 15-4 run to seize their biggest lead of the game to that point at 64-51 following a layup from freshman Allen Harris (Roslindale, Mass.). Saint Anselm led by at least 10 points over the remainder of the game to come away with the victory.
Keough led the Hawks with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double and was joined in double figures by Baudinet, Harris and Luptowski. Baudinet posted a 17-point outing, along with 15 points by Harris and 11 from Luptowski. Four Purple Knights finished in double figures in the defeat.
The Hawks have now won four straight games and improve to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Saint Anselm is back in action on Sunday, December 19 as the Hawks travel to Post University to take on the Eagles in non-conference action beginning at 1 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
