Merrimack Wins Warrior Showdown, Breezes By Nyack 101-71

NYACK, N.Y.- The Merrimack men’s basketball team claimed its third non-conference win of the season with a 101-71 decision over the host Warriors Friday evening at the Nyack Tournament. Bert Hammel’s team improves to 5-1 on the year with the win while the home team falls to 1-6.

In what is becoming a common occurrence this season, all five starters registered double-digits in scoring. For the second-consecutive game, Roland Davis (Deer Park, N.Y.) set a new career-best with 31 points. Davis added 10 assists for his first double-double of the year. Davis connected on 12 of his 19 attempts from the field and 4-of-6 from behind the arc on the night.

Dee Mency (Hagerstown, Md.) contributed 23 points while knocking down five three-pointers in the game. Aaron Strothers (Wareham, Mass.) drained 16 points for the Blue and Gold on 8-of-10 shooting from the court. Tyler Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Merrimack with seven rebounds and added 12 points while Wayne Mack (Paterson, N.J.) tallied 11.

Collectively, the Warriors shot 61.7% from the field and 57.1% from three-point range in the game.

Merrimack held a 19-point lead at the break, courtesy of a straight-on trey by Davis at the buzzer.

Mency opened the scoring for the contest with a three-pointer after the first 1:20 saw no buckets.

A pair of Warriors landed their first-career three-pointers in the win. Wilfredo Pagan (Lawrence, Mass.) and Kevin Regan (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted treys in the second-half for the visitors. Regan finished with five points on the night to establish a new career-mark.

Merrimack owned the edge on the boards, outrebounding Nyack 35-34.

James Oyamo was the home squad’s top scorer for the game with 23. Merrimack limited Nyack to 40.3% shooting from the floor and 41.7% from downtown.

“Some good things came out of tonight’s win for us. It is always good to get everyone out there. Our team really played well tonight from start to finish,” said head coach Bert Hammel.

Merrimack closes out the weekend with its final non-conference game of the 2010-11 slate. The Warriors will take on Dominican December 4 for the first time in program history.
