OMAHA, Neb. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon swimming team scored 470 points in the first day of the Mutual of Omaha Invite on Friday as they currently sit in second place, trailing only the host Nebraska Ohama.
UNO leads the field with 833 points, while the Dragons are 180 points ahead of the third place Colorado-Boulder who has 290 points. There are a total of nine teams at the event.
The Dragons were lead by Tiara Nelson and Amanda Walters, who each placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke, respectively. The 400-yard individual medley relay team also took second in a time of 4:11.93. The squad was made up of Walters, Nelson, Claire Caron and Jenna Thompson.
Nelson finished the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.54, in front of teammates Kylie Potter and Caron who finished in third and fourth. Potter swam the race in 1:09.55 and Caron finished in 1:10.46. Walters had a time of 2:15.01 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Caron, the team leader this season, also finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.46. Other top finishes include Jessy Belden in the 400 –yard individual medley (6th, 4:54.47) and Megan Rieland in the 50-yard freestyle (6th, 00:25.56).
The Dragons will continue to race at the Mutual of Omaha on Saturday with races beginning at 9 a.m.
