Griffins Struggle in Visit with Golden Bears

Kutztown, PA – (12/1/2010) – Seven points separated Chestnut Hill College from Kutztown University at halftime, 36-29, but a 54-point second half powered the Golden Bears to an eventual 90-58 victory over the Griffins. Senior center Cecelia Herald (Gaithersburg, MD) was the Griffins top performer with 16 points and five rebounds.

Kutztown University jolted out to an early lead, posting a 16-3 advantage with 11:18 still remaining in the opening half. Senior guard Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA) was the driving force for the Golden Bears. With 15 points in the period, she helped the Golden Bears extend their lead to 17, 32-15, before Chestnut Hill College (2-3) rallied to trail 36-29 at halftime. The Griffin recovery was short-lived though, as the Golden Bear lead ballooned to as many as 34, 80-46, in the second half. The Golden Bears ultimately came away with a 90-58 win.

McQuade led the Golden Bears with 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, a block, and three steals. She was supported by freshman guard Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA), sophomore forward Steph Zewe (Lewiston, PA) and senior forward Kristen Murray (Harrisburg, PA). Sisson contributed 14 points, four assists, and two steals. Zewe totaled 12 points and Murray captured 11 rebounds.

Herald was 5-for-10 (50.0%) from the field and 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the line, leading the Griffin effort. Sophomore guard Latoya Laing (Snellville, GA) was 3-for-4 (75.0%) from three-point territory and she finished with 13 points while junior guard Kamia Smith (Wyncote, PA) added 11 points and was 2-for-3 (66.7%) from long range. Junior forward Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) led the Griffins on the glass with six rebounds.

The women’s basketball team competes next in a 1:00 p.m. contest at St. Michael’s College on Saturday, December 4.
