Eagles to visit Regis, Metro this weekend

Both Chadron State College basketball teams will be playing the first of two back-to-back double-headers in the Denver area this weekend when they tangle with Regis on Friday night and Metro State on Saturday night. The games will be broadcast by KQSK-FM radio, starting at 5 p.m.

The following weekend, the Eagles will play at Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines while concluding their pre-holiday schedule.

The CSC men are coming off four straight double-digit victories, including a pair last weekend while opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at home against Mesa State and Western State. The CSC women dropped both of their games to the same teams, and at last report did not know the status of all-star Kaitlin Petri, who continues to be bothered by a leg problem.

The Regis women were just 10-17 overall and 3-16 in the RMAC last winter, but they knocked off both Western New Mexico 69-57 and New Mexico Highlands 77-68 on the road last weekend. The Rangers, who are 3-3 overall, are led by 5-foot-11 Kari Ameling, who is averaging 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. Close behind is 5-10 Lauren Luebbe, who is averaging 10.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Regis also possesses 6-5 Salina Kuiper, a native of the Netherlands who is averaging 9.3 points.

The Regis men went 0-2 on the New Mexico trip, falling 70-55 to Western New Mexico and 70-52 to Highlands. The Rangers went 2-1 during the non-conference portion of their schedule. Their top scorer is 6-foot senior Curtis Mitchell at 13 points a game. Lance Korell, a 6-1 junior, is next at 11.4 and has made 12 of the team’s 20 3-pointers. No one on the Regis roster is taller than 6-5.

Like Regis, the Metro State women also won twice while playing in New Mexico last weekend. They beat Highlands 68-51 and toppled Western 56-36. The Roadrunners also won all four of their non-league games in November.

CSC coach Tim Connealy noted that Metro is not an overwhelming offensive team, but plays strong defense and rebounds with great authority. Through the six games, the Roadrunners have made just 12 of 56 3-pointers, but have grabbed 280 rebounds compared to 162 for the opponents. Three team members are averaging just under 10 points a game. They are seniors Cassondra Bratton and Tawny Drexler, both at 9.8, and junior Jasmine Cervantes at 9.0.

The Metro men were 3-1 in November and lost at New Mexico Highlands 91-78, but defeated Western New Mexico 62-56 last weekend.

Metro’s top scorer so far is 6-4 junior Reggie Evans, who is averaging 15.5 points. Next on the chart is 6-7 sophomore Jonathan Morse, who is averaging 10.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. Both are Colorado natives, and this year’s Metro team has just one player from Australia on the roster.

In the past, several of the Roadrunners’ all-stars have been Australians. The team has a new coach this year in Derrick Clark, a former assistant at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The CSC men have not defeated Metro since the 1999-2000 season.

Since joining the RMAC in 1996-97, Metro has an overall record of 359-100 and a conference record of 212-56. During that 14-year span, the Runners have won eight RMAC East championships and eight RMAC Tournament crowns. They were the NCAA Division II national champions in 1999-2000 and 2001-02.
