Davis, Mency Combine for 52 as Merrimack Secures 92-85 Win Over Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H.- The Merrimack men’s basketball team was energized by Roland Davis’ (Deer Park, N.Y.) career-best 28 and Dee Mency’s (Hagerstown, Md.) 24 Wednesday night as it claimed a 92-85 victory over Franklin Pierce at The Fieldhouse. The Warriors improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Northeast-10 action with the win. The Ravens sink to 3-4 on the year and 1-3 in the league after the loss.

All five starters once again finished with double-digits in points. Wayne Mack (Paterson, N.J.) and Tyler Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each recorded 13 points while Aaron Strothers (Wareham, Mass.) contributed 12. Mency grabbed 13 rebounds on the night for his second double-double of the season.

The two teams were neck-to-neck in the opening minutes. The largest lead gained was five by Franklin Pierce but neither advantage lasted as Merrimack would hit a basket on the next trip down the court. The Ravens hit back-to-back treys midway through the period to extend their lead to nine.

Davis sunk a pair of baskets to pull the Warriors to within two points at 35-33. Franklin Pierce tacked on four points as Merrimack faced a 39-33 deficit with five minutes remaining in the half. The Warriors began to chip away at the Ravens lead. A hook shot in the lane by Juan Carlos Rosich (San Jose, Costa Rica) brought the visitors to within one field goal. Mency gave Merrimack the lead with under two minutes to play in the opening half. A bucket by Adedamola Abu in the final minute of the first period awarded Franklin Pierce a 45-44 edge at intermission.

Davis finished the first 20 minutes of action with 15 points while Mency contributed 14 for the Warriors. Merrimack shot 58% from the floor and 55% from behind the arc while allowing the host team 49% shooting in the opening stanza.

The Warriors came out of the locker room for the second half with a high level of intensity. Mency knocked down a three-pointer to open the period and give Merrimack a two-point lead, 47-45.

A floater in the paint by Mack resulted in the Warriors claiming a 53-52 edge with 16 minutes left in the game. Mack rolled in another layup on the next Merrimack possession to put the visitors up by three, 55-52. The Warriors stuck with Mack on the following time down the floor, utilizing his hot hand as the junior guard dialed in from downtown to elevate the lead to 58-52.

After a defensive stop that saw Rosich reject a layup with emphasis, Davis led the fast break and lofted an alley-oop to Young who jammed the ball with two hands.

Down the stretch, Merrimack staved off the Ravens to hold on for its fourth win of the year.

The Warriors shot 55% from the court and connected on half of their three-point attempts. Franklin Pierce shot 42% from the field on the night and just 32% from three-point land.

For the second-consecutive game, Merrimack outrebounded its opponents with a 44-40 advantage on the glass against the Ravens.

The Warriors return to the hardwood December 3 as they travel to compete in the Nyack Invitational. Merrimack will take on Dominican December 3 and Nyack on December 4.
