Chargers Defeated By Shaw University at UDC Holiday Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team was defeated by Shaw University, 92-42, at the University of the District of Columbia Holiday Classic on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 2-7 on the season, while the Bears improved to 6-2 for the 2010-11 campaign.

Shaw raced out to a quick lead and never looked back in this one. The Bears connected on 49 percent of their field goals, including eight three-pointers in the first half. Shaw's bench provided a large push in the opening stanza, accounting for 25 points at the break. The Bears controlled a commanding 51-22 advantage at halftime.

After the intermission, the Chargers fought hard to cut into their deficit but couldn't provide an answer for the Bears offense. Five players on the Bears squad registered 13 or more points, including a game-high 17 from Kyria Buford. Shaw extended its lead in the second half en route to a large win at the neutral venue.

Lauren Boivin led the Chargers with 10 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort. Audrey Cunningham added nine points and four boards, while Olivia DeMarco chimed in with six points and nine rebounds. Anh-Dao Tran was also feisty on the boards, hauling in a season-high nine rebounds.

The Chargers return to action on Thursday, December 30 with another non-conference match-up against Felician College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium. Live stats, video and audio will be available at www.newhavenchargers.com.
