Championship Chase: HU Men Run for National Championship in Kentucky

Harding Cross Country is ranked 13th in Division II

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Harding men's cross country team, ranked 13th in NCAA Division II, will race for a national championship Saturday at 10 a.m. at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville.
The race will be broadcast live on NCAA.com All-Access. To watch, go to NCAA.com and click on Championships. Go to the Division II Cross Country Championship Home Page and click the Watch link under Championship Info.

Coach Steve Guymon's squad qualified for the national meet by winning the NCAA Division II South Region Meet in Huntsville, Ala., on Nov. 20. It was Harding's 10th regional championship in the last 11 years.
The Bisons also won their 10th Gulf South Conference championship on Nov. 6 in Birmingham, Ala.

Junior Daniel Kirwa has been Harding's top runner all season. A native of Burnt Forrest, Kenya, Kirwa has won his last three races, including the GSC and South Region individual titles.

Saturday's course will be familiar to the Harding runners. The Bisons ran in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Oct. 2, finishing 12th of 38 teams, many of which were Division I schools. Kirwa finished sixth in the eight-kilometer race. Saturday's race is 10 kilometers.

Kirwa has been anything but a one-man show this season, however. Junior Philip Biwott and senior Wojciech Kopec both earned All-GSC and All-Region honors. Freshman Taylor Lively and sophomore Manase Busienei also garnered All-GSC.

Rounding out Harding's seven-runner contingent are freshman Andrew Evans and junior Ryan Johnson.

The Bisons have been a force in the Division II national picture in recent years. Harding has finished in the top 10 at the national meet six of the last seven seasons. The Bisons placed ninth last season and had a program-best third-place finish in 2003.
