SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Dec. 2) – Ashley Beckley scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in a 20-5 second-half run that turned a slim deficit into a big lead and Central Oklahoma went on to topple Incarnate Word 71-61 here Thursday night.
Beckley saw limited playing time in the first half because of foul trouble and the Bronchos trailed 32-31 at intermission, but the senior standout took over in the second half with 17 points as UCO rallied for its third straight win in improving to 3-1.
“It’s a big win for us on the road,” head coach Guy Hardaker said. “Ashley being in foul trouble really put us in a bind the first half, but she took over in the second half and we had a bunch of other players step up when we needed them to.”
Beckley, the lone senior on the team, finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes and the Bronchos overcame 34.8-percent shooting (23-of-66) in the contest. UCO also shot just 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range, but finished 22-of-25 (88.0 percent) from the foul line.
Alyssa Fuxa added 14 points and eight rebounds while playing 38 of the 40 minutes and Courtney Allen had 11 points and five boards in 39 minutes, with Tarrington Oakes chipping in nine points and six assists off the bench.
The Cardinals led by as many as six in the first half before UCO surged in front 31-27 late only to see UIW score the final five points to take a 32-31 lead into the break.
That lead was 35-32 early in the second half before Beckley took over, tying it with a three-point play and putting the Bronchos ahead to stay at 37-35 with a pair of free throws. A three-point play by Oakes and Kylie Mayes’ layup ended UCO’s 20-5 surge that made it 52-40 with 11:24 left to play and the Cardinals got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Bronchos continue their Lone Star Conference crossover road trip Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
