Bearcats Come Up Short Against Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan.—Shelly Martin’s three-point attempt with seven seconds left was no good and Abby Henry’s desperation heave as time expired was off the mark as Northwest Missouri State fell just short Saturday night on the road to No. 4 Washburn 82-79.

After Washburn (6-0, 2-0 MIAA) jumped out to an early 15-7 lead, Northwest (4-2, 0-2 MIAA) went on a 16-4 run to take the lead at 23-19 halfway through the opening half. Both teams went back-and-forth the rest of the period and the Bearcats trailed 41-39 at the intermission.

Washburn appeared to have the game well in hand when they opened the second half on a huge tear and led 62-44 with 14:45 remaining in the ballgame. The Bearcats did not go away, as they slowly chipped away and eventually tied the game at 71 with fewer than five minutes to play. The Lady Blues took a brief 78-76 lead before Henry nailed a three-pointer to give the Bearcats a 79-78 lead with 54 seconds left. Alyssa Mullen gave Washburn the lead after a layup with 30 seconds to go and after Martin’s miss, Megan Lassley sunk a pair of free-throws with three seconds left.

Martin scored a season-high 21 points and went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, and dished out a season-best six assists. Henry added 20 points in the loss. Kyla Roehrig and Tara Roach each played solid games inside for the Bearcats. Each pulled down a game-high nine rebounds with Roehrig adding 14 points and Roach chipping in with six.

Northwest shot 47.5 percent from the field with the Lady Blues hitting 43 percent from the floor. The Bearcats also hit 11-of-23 (47.8) from downtown, with Washburn hitting 31 percent, going 9-for-29. Washburn would hit five more free throws in the game and committed 11 turnovers to Northwest’s 13. It marks the first time this season that the Bearcats have had more turnovers than their opponent in a game.

Next up for the Bearcats will be a trip to Pittsburg, Kan., for a meeting with Pittsburg State on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Tip-off against the Gorillas is set for 5:30 p.m.
