Wingate women's soccer earn three seed; Bulldogs host Catawba Tuesday

Rock Hill, S.C.----The Wingate University women’s soccer team will be the three seed in this week’s Food Lion South Atlantic Conference soccer tournament. The Bulldogs will open play Tuesday night, hosting the Catawba College Indians at 7 p.m. at the WU Soccer Complex. The Wingate Sports Network will provide a video pay-per-view broadcast of the contest. The ‘Dogs finished the regular season 11-2-3 overall and 7-1-1 in the SAC.

The Bulldogs have won nine of their last 10 contests; they have dropped only one match since the season-opener. The Bulldogs registered a 0-0 tie at #10 Armstrong Atlantic State University on Sept. 22. Sophomore goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) racked up 14 saves for the Bulldogs. Wingate followed with a thrilling 2-1 win at Tusculum College. The ‘Dogs trailed 1-0 at halftime, but senior forward Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.) tied the game early in the second half. The match looked to be heading to a tie, but freshman defender Chelsey Horan (Waxhaw, N.C.) netted her first career goal with 57 seconds remaining in the second overtime for the thrilling 2-1 win.

The ‘Dogs returned home and handed Catawba College a 2-1 loss. Sophomore midfielder Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, Mass.) scored early in the league contest, then set up junior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) for a goal in the 20th minute for a 2-0 lead. Miranda had a goal and an assist in Wingate’s 3-0 win at Newberry College. Adams had a pair of goals and an assist in the 5-0 victory at Brevard College.

Wingate scored a pair of goals in the final 14 minutes to overcome a 2-1 deficit for a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lees-McRae College. Williams put Wingate on top 13:35 into the match, but the Bobcats scored two unanswered goals and led 2-1 with 18 minutes remaining. Williams set up junior forward Hannah Holsclaw (Matthews, N.C.) with less than 13 minutes remaining to tie the game at two. Williams scored her second goal of the day with 2:22 remaining in the match to give Wingate the win.

Junior midfielder Casey King (Danvers, Mass.) scored in the 78th minute to give the ‘Dogs a 1-0 win over first-place Lenoir-Rhyne University, snapping the Bears’ 12-match unbeaten streak and giving them their only SAC loss of the season. Sophomore defender Kelly Moldenhauer (Charlotte, N.C.) scored the game-winner in Wingate’s 2-0 win at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Holsclaw added a goal for the Bulldogs as they notched their eighth shutout of the year.

The ‘Dogs added two more victories this past week. Miranda scored 21:17 into the Anderson University contest, while Adams put Wingate up 2-0 nine minutes later with her fourth goal of the year. Adams and Miranda assisted on the third and final goal of the day as Williams scored her ninth goal of the year. On Saturday at Lincoln Memorial University, Horan provided the offense. She scored her third goal of the season in the 29th minute to give the Bulldogs their seventh league victory of the year.

Williams leads Wingate and ranks sixth in the SAC with nine goals on the season. Her 21 points is good for seventh in the conference. Adams has four goals and eight assists, ranking second in the league in assists. Miranda and junior forward Hannah Holsclaw (Matthews, N.C.) are tied for second on the team with five goals each. The Bulldogs lead the SAC in goals allowed, goals against average and shutouts.

The winner of Tuesday’s match between Wingate and Catawba will advance to the tournament semifinals and face the winner of the Tusculum vs. Carson-Newman match.
