West Chester Downs GBC Men’s Basketball, 76-59

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior guard Darnell Cephas scored a career-high 16 points off the bench, but the Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team suffered a 76-59 loss to the host West Chester University in non-league action at the Hollinger Field House on Sun. afternoon.

West Chester (4-1) shot 52.8 percent from the field, including 60 percent in the second half to keep GBC (1-4) at bay. The Lightning were held to just 41.7 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 35-23 as they could not avenge a 67-64 season-opening loss last year.

The Golden Rams had four score in double-figures including Lance McDowell, who scored a season-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. McDowell was 7-for-9 from the field, which included two dunks, while also going 9-of-10 at the free-throw line. Shannon Givens (12 points, five assists), Khalif Foster (13 points) and Miguel Bocachia (11 points, four assists) all scored in double figures as well.

Cephas was one of three Lightning players to score in double figures as senior forward Terrence Parkes scored 13 and McDuffie added 10. Parkes and McDuffie each grabbed five rebounds as well.

Senior point guard Azeez Ellegood pitched in with five points and three assists. He made 1-of-3 attempts from three-point range, and with that one three-point field goal, he tied Nate Lewis for No. 1 on the school’s all-time career three-point field goal list with 122.

Goldey-Beacom never led, but was within two (21-19) with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half after a layup by graduate student forward Rich Flemming (eight points, six rebounds). However, the Golden Rams closed out the opening frame on a 12-4 run that pushed the margin to 10 at the break (33-23).

The Lightning crawled back to within four (41-37) after a three-pointer by senior guard Jon Crawford (seven points), but West Chester went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to open up a 14-point advantage.

After a very challenging non-conference schedule to start the season, GBC will open up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a visit to the Gallagher Center where the Lightning will take on the South Division favorite, Philadelphia University at 8 p.m. on Wed. night.
