Birmingham, AL—Surprising outcomes continued to shape the Gulf South Conference Football standings this past week.
Saturday featured another Homecoming overtime shocker, while Thursday night’s GSC-TV Game of the Week brought another Top 25 upset to the airwaves. Valdosta State survived the week as the lone one-loss team in the league standings and now controls its own GSC Title destiny.
Homecoming host Southern Arkansas picked the perfect time to snap its eight-game losing streak, clipping West Alabama in Magnolia in overtime for the second consecutive year.
No. 21 North Alabama entered Thursday’s GSC-TV contest with its back against the wall, but the Lions remained in the league hunt thanks to a 31-7 triumph at No. 19 Delta State. UNA climbed to No. 18 in the AFCA Top 25, while DSU dropped out of the poll.
Henderson State hosted cross-street rival Ouachita Baptist in the 84th annual Battle of the Ravine, tying the all-time series behind a 35-26 victory. Quarterback Nick Hardesty became HSU’s all-time leading passer with 4,609 yards.
VSU survived a scare at Arkansas Tech, 21-7. The Blazers defense flexed their muscles, holding the Wonder Boys to 99 total yards. Linebacker Larry Dean led the effort, becoming the school’s career tackles leader (341). VSU also held on to their No. 10 AFCA ranking.
Harding hit for 26 unanswered points in the third quarter versus in-state rival Arkansas-Monticello, claiming a 33-26 home win. UAM signal caller Scott Buisson made news individually, setting the GSC record for most plays in a career (1,869).
