Saint Leo Downs Lady Pirates, 67-63, On Friday

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo overcame a four-point Armstrong Atlantic State University lead in the final minute to claim a 67-63 women's college basketball victory over the visiting Pirates on Friday evening in the Saint Leo Sleep Inn Classic.

With the win, the Lions (1-1) notch their first win of the season while handing the Lady Pirates (2-1) their first loss of the young 2010-11 campaign.

Armstrong opened up the game well offensively, building a 22-10 lead in the first 10 minutes of action, but the Lions chipped away at the lead, taking a one-point lead into the break, 29-28.

In the second half, Saint Leo held a six-point lead, 43-37, with 9:19 left, but Armstrong used a 16-5 run to retake the lead, eventually building a 62-58 lead on a pair of Jazmin Walker free throws with 50 seconds left.

Saint Leo started the last-minute comeback on a pair of free throws from Brittney Carannante, then back-to-back layups by Lauren Lee and Artigua Kilpatrick put the Lions in front. Armstrong had a chance to tie with eight seconds left but Jazmin Walker's layup try was blocked by Carannante, then the Lions got a late free throw and basket off of a missed free throw to seal the victory.

Senior Arpine Amirkhanyan led all players on the night for the Lady Pirates with 20 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while junior Brooke Long notched 17 points and Walker added 10.

Saint Leo was led by Lee and Carannante, who each collected 13 points, and Jamarra Robinson, who added 11.

Armstrong shot 39.3 percent from the floor and hit just 3-of-11 three-pointers for 27.3 percent. Saint Leo hit 38.3 percent from the floor but hit 6-of-11 three-pointers for 54.5 percent. The Lady Pirates committed 30 turnovers, compared to 22 for the Lions.

Play in the Sleep Inn Classic continues on Saturday as the Lady Pirates will face Florida Southern at 2:30 p.m.
