Earlier this season the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters defeated the Warriors in three straight sets. The Warriors now improve to 13-13 overall and 10-11 in conference play.
Cal State Stanislaus recorded a team high of 72 kills. Lianne Vicchio led the team with a career high of 21 kills. Eva Chafeh set a career high of 18 kills on the night.
"It was a goal of our team to go out this weekend to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay and I am really happy with how my team played, " says head coach Christina Lore.
The first two sets were tough wins for the Warriors, with a tie score 14 times in the first set and a tie score 17 times in the second set. Stanislaus almost pulled out the sweep in set three, but Monterey Bay was not ready to concede. The Otters kept the momentum and built off of Warrior errors in the fourth set to force the fifth set. The Warriors took the lead in set five and never allowed the Otters to take control, ending the set at 15-9.
"I am proud that my team stayed strong throughout the match and never let up all the way through the fifth set," added coach Lore.
Contributing to a dominating Warrior offense was Melissa Bishop with 11 kills and Kaycee Gow with 10 kills.
Jessica Lehner set a career record with a total of 58 assists.
In addition to the Warrior offense, the Otters were unable to come up on top defensively. Megan Britton led the Warriors with a match high of 40 digs. Chafeh also had a career match high of 19 digs. Vicchio had 15 digs and Lehner had 13 digs on the night.
Bishop led her team in serving with 3 service aces, followed by Britton with 2 service aces.
Five Warriors were strong on shutting down the Otter offense at the net. Gow led the Stanislaus team with 4 block assists. Chafeh had 2 block assists. Lehner, Vicchio, and Bishop each assisted with blocks.
Leading for Cal State Monterey Bay was Rheann Fall with 22 kills. Melanie Lashbrook was also a strong force for the Otters with 17 kills and 3 service aces. Monique Sena led with 23 assists and Dionna Lucas had 19 digs.
Before the weekend's play the Otters were ranked 6th in the region, with the top eight teams attending the regional tournament. Cal State Monterey Bay has now dropped to 15-9 overall and 12-9 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus looks to end their season with a win at San Francisco State Friday night.
