MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Dory Hines' layup with 38 seconds left put Mount Olive ahead to stay as the nationally 25th-ranked Trojans rallied from a 12-point deficit for an 84-80 victory over Mars Hill in the final game of the 45th Annual Mount Olive College Pickle Classic Saturday at Kornegay Arena.
Brandon Allen and Derek Staton were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Sammy Emile (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Dion Malachi (Shelby, N.C.) of Mars Hill, Mark Brown of Chowan and Elijah Smith of North Georgia.
In Saturday's opening contest, Christian Um Kaman scored a game-high 20 points, including a tie-breaking free throw with 2:08 remaining as Chowan rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final nine minutes for a 65-63 victory over North Georgia. Chowan finished with a 1-1 mark in the Pickle Classic, while North Georgia suffered its second two-point loss in as many nights.
Mount Olive (3-0) trailed from the start until Staton's jumper tied the game 70-70 with 4:53 left in the contest. After a defensive stop, Hines was fouled and hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Trojans their first lead of the contest. Hines and Deshaune Green combined to hit 4-of-4 free throws to cap a 9-0 run and extend Mount Olive's lead to 75-70 with 3:10 remaining.
Tarron Stewart (Tampa, Fla.) answered with a three-point play as Mars Hill cut the Trojans' lead to a single point. Hines drove through traffic in the lane and put home a layup off the glass to put Mount Olive back on top 81-80. Deshaune Green, who blocked two shots down the stretch, sank a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to make it a three-point game. Travis Baskerville partially blocked a three-point attempt with 14 seconds left and Hines added another free throw to help seal the win.
Mars Hill scored the first six points of the game and raced out to a 17-5 lead less than six minutes into the contest. Allen hit a pair of three-pointers and two technical free throws as Mount Olive pulled within 31-27 with 3:27 left in the first half. Dallas Johnson (Auburndale, Fla.) then scored five points in a 7-0 Mars Hill run as the Lions built the lead back to double figures. The Trojans whittled the margin to single digits and Derek Staton's jumper with three seconds left pulled Mount Olive within 40-34 at the break.
